New to egging - what is the advantage of using a SS grid vs the standard plated steel grids? Given the price differential: ~ $20 - $50 for a round chrome/plated steel grid vs $100+ for SS.

theres more heat retention in the heavey ss grates for grill marks compared to the thin plated grids if you like grid marks

Older eggs came with porcelain coated steel grids. The porcelain tended to chip off, leaving exposed steel to rust, leading to more chipping. Newer eggs come with SS grids which don't rust. I don't really see any benefit to the thicker aftermarket SS grids. Especially since I prefer to sear in a CI pan or griddle.

I'm firmly on the grill grates train. Just lay them on top of the OEM SS grid. My CI grids are going to collect some dust I believe.

Nothing worse than a rusty plated grid. Stainless steel is the only way to go for me.
With stainless you can clean it without risk of causing rust to develop.

As others have said. I got couple SS made for XL and MM from Michaelcustomgrillworks.com. Michael is the best guy I have come across in a while. He listens to customers.
