Redneck SV and caveman style sear
We had my parents over last night for rib eye caps. I didn't have enough pre done ones from Costco so I pulled a three bone prime rib out of the freezer and stole the cap off of it. By noontime things were not really thawing that well so I filled the crock pot with water and put the steaks in it in zip locks. Got me thinking " wonder what the tempatures is?". So I pulled out my digital thermometer. It was at 131. So my little pea brain got to thinking. Can I sous vide these puppies in my crockpot? I had to keep turning it on and off but for two hours I kept the temp at 129 to 131.5 . Pulled them out just before my important guests arrived and seared them cave man style. My mom and dad are in their 80's and ranted and raved how great the steaks were. Their favorite cut for years has been fillet but I think I might have converted them. Pictures of the sear.

There are devices that do just this for a "poor man's SV". You need a manual crock pot, as it monitors water temp and cuts power then turns it back on to maintain even temps. Digital CP will cycle off and stay off with the first power break.

I will probably get an anova. I just wanted to see if I could pull it off with something different. I cooked pulled pork and briskets on my Weber kettle before I bought the right tool for the job in my BGE

Great audible and results right there. No doubt the caveman finish sealed the deal. Congrats.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.
