I Salvaged a Large and XL Plate Setter to Make Stones

Let me start out by saying running over your egg isn't the best idea. Five years later it still stings a little. So why not turn lemons into lemonade.

I've had a two legged plate setter sitting on a shelf in the garage collecting dust ever since I went Grave Digger on my egg. One of the few things to somewhat survive the fall. After years of sitting I finally found a use for it.

I ordered a Woo from Ceramic Grill Store last weekend since my small plate setter went missing. When looking at different options for the Woo, it dawned on me that I still had the old plate setter laying around. So I skipped on the stone to save a little money. With the Woo in hand, I needed to get this whole plate setter stone figured out. So I stopped up at my parents place to borrow my Dad's angle grinder and diamond blade. I took a few pics along the way:

Large plate setter all clamped up and ready for action

I brought my XL plate setter with. I had it replaced under warranty as it started to chip. I figured why not do something with the XL plate setter if I'm going to be making a bunch of dust with the other plate setter.

All finished up. They came out pretty good. I ended up saving about $70+ worth of stones. With the extra savings I ordered a couple drip pans when ordering the Woo.

The small should be good to go now!

Awesome!  I've used masonry disc on small 4 1/2" angle grinder to score and chisel-break a firebrick cleanly, is a diamond disc much more efficient?

Great recycling effort right there.  You are right about being able to really take advantage of the SBGE now.  Have fun.

    Great job!
I am not sure if what I am about to describe is going to make sense, but I will try.  If you have the part where the leg of the platesetter broke off right by the 90 degree bend, with the angle grinder you can cut off and smooth the rough edges down and make your self drip pan spacers as well.  I am talking about the parts that it looks like you cut off in picture 2.  Heck, you can even make mini ones from the scrap pieces cut from the difference between pics 2&3 as well!

    Regardless, great job!

Although you show your reclaimed plate setter as an indirect stone, they also make good pizza stones.  No worries about high heat cracking them!

Running over your egg is probably a drastic approach to getting a plate setter to re-purpose.  If you have a good relationship with your dealer, you might ask for a lead to someone who bought a new one 'cuz they broke one.  Or, if they could spare a broken one turned in for warranty.

Thanks Miked. Long story but I left the egg behind my truck in the garage. I didn't see it as I walked to the front of the garage to grab a Coke from the fridge than to my truck. My truck won when backing up. Fortunately it was my spare large I picked up for $200 used. Unfortunately I'm out $200

@Canugghead It's one tool I don't use very often. The reason why I had to borrow my Dad's since I don't own one myself. I would say it is. My Dad told me a story about how he borrowed his angle grinder with blade to the masonry guy he had hired to do their fireplace. He saw him struggle with his angle grinder and blade. My Dad had 4 different types of diamond blades for it. So it was his go to blade with 15 other or so blades he had in the toolbox. It was painless cutting it down. Easier than I was expecting

@RedSkip I used a diamond blade for the initial cut. I cleaned it up using sanding discs for smoothing the edges.

@Sea2Ski Thanks! You make a great point with making spacers. I wish I would have thought about that before tossing them. They would have come in handy down the road

Yeah they weren't doing too much sitting on the shelf but figured they'd come in handy at some point
