Egg assembly

I've had my Egg for a few months now and absolutely love it.  I think I need to adjust it though.  When I first started using it the top had a pretty good seal and was even with the bottom.  Now though, it has a bit of an under-bite.  The top hangs over the bottom in the rear by about a half inch.  I don't remember what tightened that and I don't want to start loosening and tightening without knowing what I'm doing.  'Any suggestions?  Is it ok to leave it alone or should I try to realign it?

thanks!

PJ

loosen the top band at the carriage bolt enough to move the band. Lower the band on the ceramics until the edge of the band lines up with the transition between the gasket and the ceramic. check all around the egg for uniform distance between the bands. re-tighten. If it is an Xl, you will need to open and remove the side springs first.

Make sure the bands are basically parallel and lined up with the edge of the ceramics. For the XL you will have a 1/16 " of ceramics showing on both top and bottom then the steel bands.
  • The first question to ask is "Is your Egg leaking smoke?" If it's not, don't sweat a small over / under bite.

If you do decide to realign your bands, don't be surprised if the bands shift once you put the springs back on. The springs can pull it out of the alignment you set.

I enlist the help of my wife to put some weight on the dome while I tighten the hardware (band carriage bolts and hinge bolts). Doing this, the alignment might shift a bit once I put the springs back on, but it's usually close enough to pass the dollar bill test on the gasket.

I'm solving this problem this spring when it warms up a bit with a Rutland gasket.  :)
