Rib racks. Yay or Nay

I picked up two racks of St. Louis style rib to do n my large.

That leaves me with a question. Are racks important? Does smoking then vertically in a rack make a difference?

I don't use racks for ribs on my Egg. My XL will fit 2 racks comfortably laying flat over the plate setter. If I need to cook a lot of racks, the Assassin gets the call.

No eggsperience with a rack but since you have an AR, you have two levels available.  You can cut the racks in half if too long (as I suspect they are) to fit inside your heat deflector and rotate around half way thru the cook.   Just use the toothpick test for the finish-line.  FWIW-

I use a rib rack and like it just for the added volume.  I also like to wrap the ends that hang over the plate setter with some foil to keep them from burning.

I use a rack, it comes in handy for other things besides ribs.

I'm sure it can be done without one.

A rib rack was the very first thing I ever bought for use in my new egg 17 years ago. I used it once and immediately realized I didn't need it nor even liked it and never used it again! Not even sure where it is! Save your money!

  • I only use a rib rack when smoking three at a time. I don't see any reason to use one unless there is a space issue.

  • I just posted exactly the meat you're cooking. The Large wasn't big enough to lay them flat so I cut them in half, skwerered them. and stood them up to cook. Trust me, it all works.

When the need arises, I use my V-Rack that I use for roasting,

For some reason, I do not like cutting the rack in half.

Yay if doing more than 3 slabs. The risk is losing rub/bark when taking the ribs in and out of them
