Is it possible to cook pork shoulder in an oven and get even decent results? Please let me explain this insanity. I have been "wowing" my brother and his family for years with my egged food. They love the pulled pork more than anything. Here is where it gets crazy. We are going on vacation in a few weeks, and he was going to pack up my large and bring it with us, but that won't be happening now(please don't get me started on my sister in law) So, he suggested trying a few butts in the oven. I said I would supply the rub, but didn't want to be in the State of North Carolina and take a chance of getting cought doing this to an innocent piece of pork, for fear of God knows what kind of punishment might be forthcoming! Anyway, has it been done? Start at 400* for a little while to get crust, and then cut back to 250*, any ideas here? I am prepared to tell him that it just can't be done, but thought I would ask first. Any help would be appreciated.

Crab leg,[p]I would recommend doing some butts, pull the pork, vacume pack it in FoodSaver bags, freeze, and take it with you.[p]Frozen Pulled Pork this way travels very well. When ready to eat, drop the bag in boiling water for about 30 minutes and when you cut the bag, it's like when you just pulled it. Fantastic![p]GM

  • Crab leg,
I think it will taste more like a baked pork or a ham without any smoke. You can bake any piece of meat in an oven but only a smoker is gonna give you that special outdoor taste. [p]Bottom line ... if I was desperate ... maybe. I would suggest lots of sauce perticularly one with a smoke flavor.[p]Doug

Some mighty fine pulled/shredded pork has come out of ovens and crockpots all over the world. I used the following methods in the olden times (i.e. pre-BGE ownership).[p]For the oven, you can use any large pan, but the full size foil steam pans from Sam's work great. Put some apple juice in the bottom and place the rubbed butts in there (on a rack if you like, but not necessary) and cook at 400° for 40-60 minutes uncovered (add liquid during this time if needed). Drop oven temp to 250° and cover the pan with foil adding liquid again, if needed. Cook until you can turn a fork in 'em. You can use your Polder to monitor temp if you like. You can also bump up the temp to 300° or so if you want to speed things along.[p]For the crockpot, just put the meat and a little liquid in and let it cook all day. Add some BBQ sauce for the last 2-3 hours or so.[p]Is it BBQ? Heck no, but it sure do taste good!!![p]Jim

Crab leg,[p]I'm sure that folks have gotten some pretty good Pulled Pork out of the ovens, no doubt about it. Dont have any recipes for you but some have already suggested a way to get it done.[p]I would simply cook the pork, put it in bags and freeze it, or vaccuum seal it if you have one, and take it with you. Pulled pork tastes great after its been frozen and you dont have to be angry at the sis in law for not allowing you to bring with the BGE. Everyone is happy and you have good smoked pork off the egg.[p]Hope it all works out for you.[p]Troy

Crab leg,[p]I truly wouldn't do it. It will forever average down the quality of your best pork. If they insist, I'd let them, do it and stay out of the kitchen that day. I'd also suggest something that is cooked well in the oven. Like a beef roast or a pork loin served with potatoes and gravy.[p](Besides, they may let you bring your egg if you refuse.)

    Crab leg,
sure? why wouldn't it 'work'?[p]you will not have the smoke, which, to me is the major reason i love pulled pork, but you'll still have good tasty cooked edible food.[p]

Crab leg,[p]You can do it in the oven, but you do have time to make it on the egg and freeze some for the trip. But, I have an idea. You said you will be in north carolina? got to be some place close to where you will be staying that makes bbq pork. Cook some up in the oven for the sister in law, and buy some of the local stuff for yourself and the hubby.

  • Crab leg,[p]When you get to where you're going, buy a cheap covered grill. Not talking about a $80 Weber, maybe a $20 knock-off from a grocery store. You won't be able to do an 18 hour slow cook at 250, but you might be able to cook at 300 or 350 for a few hours, load more charcoal. You can always cook it long enough on the grill to get a good flavor, then finish it in the oven.

    1shot1kill,
An oven is a newfangled version of an old fashioned breadbox. Use it to store various loaves, english muffins, rolls and opened boxes of Cheeze-It's to keep them from getting stale. I have 2 in my kitchen.[p]Cheers,

    Crab leg,
Sister in law? Man, she's only a sister in law. Her vote don't count for squat, bring the Egg and do it right, leave the sister in law home if need be.[p]Cheers,
