XL or Large for two people (plus some entertaining)?

Theoretically, the Large should be able to cook 13 burgers at a time (leaving 20 sq. inches per), while the XL can cook 22. The Large is big enough, it is much easier to move, accessories are cheaper, and my guess is that it is less prone to cracking than the XL. The worst case scenario is that you might have to do a couple of batches if you are doing a really big bunch of vegetables, burgers, or steaks. I think a more likely scenario for a cooking session is to want to cook at different temperatures or using different setups (smoking one thing while grilling another); in these situations adding a Joe Jr. to a Large is a more versatile combination than an XL.
  • I first bought a MM to get a hang of egg cooking. Got an XL after 2 months. Love the combo. Looked at large but area for indirect cooking is limited on it. XL can be thirty at higher temps (above 400 F) though.

Thanks for all the advice. Think it's a Large for me.
I hope you kept reading :-)

I have an XL, I don't have to rotate food.  ;)
I rotate on a kettle. As stated... =)

  • Still not decided...the extra CGS raised grills aren't available here in the U.K. so I really don't know which way to go. Still thinking Large as wife wants to move house this year...

We had the same decision, and in the end went for a large first and then a MM later, which given that there is two of us (and three cats) is now the egg we use almost all of the time. Only time we use the large is for pizza, turkey and entertaining. Have entertained a party of eight using both eggs going at the same time, reverse seared ribeye in the large and veggies in the MM.

As for raised grids, you can easily make your own mods. The pic below is a medium grid inside a large with SS bolts. Nowhere near as flexible as the CGS kit, but readily available in the UK.

Can do the same thing with a MM using the grid from a mini

  • Good idea. Probably go that route myself
  • XL all the way, unless you plan on getting a Large and a small right off the bat

  • @Nogbaduk,

Enjoy that XL. I LOVE mine and it has served me proudly - whether just a cook for my wife and I, or cooking for a party.

  • I am family of 2.  XL all the way.  Large too small in my opinion.  Rack of ribs is bigger than plate setter.  XL way more versatile.
