What do you guys think of the new ThermoPop? I am thinking of ordering one and am wondering if it could possibly be a cheaper ThermoPen alternative.

I know many people do exactly that.  If I was doing it again I might go that route.  Some reports are that both units are equally responsive.
  • Thanks I think ill try it out and get back with y'all, all the reviews seemed positive.

  • I have a MK4 Thermapen and a Thermopop (and a Chef Alarm). Both are great.

The ThermoPop and the Thermapen have technical differences. Those differences all cost more resulting in the Thermapen costing more.  If the differences are not important to you, then the ThermoPop is a good economical choice.  You need to decide if the accuracy, speed, backlighting, auto on/off, and battery differences are important to you.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’  Dare to think for yourself.

The thermopop is IMO a great #2 device. It is not as fast and lacks some features. That said it is quite inexpensive. I would not personally own this in lieu of the thermopen, but rather as an augment to it.

I gifted a couple of thermopops this past christmas.  Get great reviews-but these were people who had never previously bought into "cook to temp" , regardless of cooking device.  Now converts.

I gave five of them to the nieces and nephews. I've only heard from the youngest nephews bride, she was thrilled. She also makes great pie as the nephews pants are finding out.
  • Thermapen is worth the investment... you will get it now or later...

If you want to be part of the upper class, get a thermapen.

As I mentioned in a prior thermo thread-had the thermopop been available several years ago I would have purchased one.  No such luck so ended up with a thermapen (and I'm good with that purchase and its performance over several years).  But sometimes, " better is the enemy of good enough."
