updated version of homemade wooden grill scraper

Several months ago in view of all the warnings against wire grill brushes I made this one.

well, it has gotten worn down and needed a refresher so rather than to have to lay out the spacing each time I just laid out a grid and drilled the holes in advance. In the future I will merely whack off the worn end and be ready to rock and roll again!

Ron my 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade Principles each had one similar to the second picture. I remember each of them to this day!!
My 12th grade Principle's had a lot more holes in it! :o;)

As I was typing my question, "do you anticipate spanking anyone with that?", it dawned on me you're just getting it ready for the next refresher...

Why not not just drill them as needed?  Seems you may lose some real estate when you cut the old section off.

Either way nice project for the weekend.

Thanks. Well this way since I don't always remember stuff anymore :o  I won't have to go back out each time to measure the on center distance of the rods, nor grab my caliper to measure the rod diameter.

I get why you drilled them all at once, makes sense.

Just curious tho why you spaced the next rows so far apart. Seems like you could have spaced each row a bit closer to get more service life out of each paddle.

I thought about it, but seeing that this wood is soft cedar only 1/4" thick and knowing how hard I press then I was afraid with too many holes too close together it would break easily. Next time I make one I'll probably use 1/2" hard maple and then yes I will make the row of holes closer than the 3/4" I made these.

Use oak ... you'll only need the first set of holes.

I'm curious why you didn't follow instructions and simply "burn" the slots in the tapered end of the grill scraper?

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Ron I  believe this what Tom was referencing.  I have the "Woody" & "Woody Paddle" High heat with even pressure movement across the grid & it'll create its own grooves. Yes, you can make it yourself. Ideally with oak. No need for the holes imho.

OK guys - I see the error in my ways so I will put a taper on the end. BTW last night it dawned on my why I prefer to pre-cut the slots - I clean my grills when they are cold, not hot.

That second picture brought up too many bad memories of time spent in the principal's office (back when they could beat you)!
