OT - Douwe Egberts Coffee

I recently travelled to Houston TX and found this coffee at the hotel I was staying in.  I was surprised how good it was black, and curious if others have had this experience.

Can you recommend something similar or better?  I'm getting tired of the basic Maxwell House/Folgers.

Im not a coffee snob or looking for anything super fancy, just trying to expand my palette.

I buy starbucks french roast when on sale at costco 15$/bag. we grind beans nightly and set the timer, but grinding right before brew is the best for flavor. when they aren't on sale I buy kirkland brand beans and like that coffee too.

^^^ This. We do the same, but cut the French roast with 1/3 to 1/2 espresso beans (usually Kirkland). Makes for a great brew.
  • I love French roast the best too, but my favorite is from Whole Foods. Their organic French roast. I think Starbucks beans are over roasted and bitter. I enjoy it black too.

I personally think grinding the beans close to the brew makes all the difference over the pre-ground stuff - even with good brands

i haven't done so, but have read the same applies when making runs for Q.

I'm in the snob category when it comes to equipment, but I really enjoy Kauai Coffee Company's Vanilla Macadamia Nut, and Coconut Caramel Crunch, and their standard medium or dark roast.  I can get preground on sale here for $6 a bag at Jewel or Schnucks.

Also dig the hell out of Chicago's Intelligentsia medium roast.

I'm on board with Hans 100%, but preground isn't that bad, when you're accustomed to doctoring the hospital's "rot gut" blend.  Worked on our Orthopedic Unit recently, and one of my peeps gave me a fresh cup of Folgers Gourmet Peanut Butter Cookie coffee with a splash of chocolate milk.  It kicked a$$.

Didn't know what to expect, but it was pretty damn good for Folgers....like a Peanut Butter Blossum.
