First Low & Slow - BGE Charcoal

Got the new rig set up for low and slow in the AM. While filling it up with charcoal I couldn't help but notice the size (or lack thereof) of the BGE brand charcoal. Did I get a crummy bag or should I try Fogo or some other brand?

  • You'll be fine. Just light one spot toward the front middle. About fist size. Enjoy and have fun!

BGE brand is just overpriced Royal Oak.  Go to Walmart and spend less for the orange bag.

Feel free to try other lumps, there is a definite difference between brands.  It's all personal preference.

The BGE lump that came with our Egg as part of the bundle we got had a lot of small stuff / dust in the bag. I guess transatlantic shipping / multiple handling doesn't help either. Trying some locally produced stuff next on the basis that less shipping will mean better lump.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.   Some good advice above.  Experiment with whatever you can easily get and go from there.
