just attempted my first Pork butt cook and glad I got up early, the butt was done. With the experience comes questions and hopefully some of the knowledgeable ones can provide me some guidance.
Does the size of the lump used cause temp regulation issues? By that I mean is to much small pieces make it harder to control the temp? Does the lid on your big green egg sit perfectly on top of the bottom, or is it offset any?
Thank you all for any and all advice. Happy New Year to all

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. As you know the BGE is an air-flow driven machine once you have a fire going. Control the flow thus the size of the fire regardless of lump load. I have never found any difference in fire control with size of lump other than when I intentionally want to run at a low temp (200*F or less, no controller) I will use nothing but small pieces.
Regarding alignment, I have a slight off-set left-to-right but as long as you have a good fit ( no air leaks) then no worries.
Happy New Year.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
thank you that low end 225 is a tough one to hold on to. even with the egg almost choked off it is still tough. I will definitely have to re-check the fitment for leaks

You don't really need to try for 225* for low and slow, 250/275* works fine and much easier to hold at those temps. The one area that the size of lump you are using would be if you are using the original fire grate. Sometimes smaller pieces of lump will plug some of the holes causing air flow problems. You can take a wire hanger and fashion a wiggle rod and gently wiggle the fire grate from the bottom vent. I switched to a high q grate and others use a kick ash basket and the wiggle rod is not necessaryNerk Ahia LBGE

thank you, went and purchased a kick ash basket and found the lid a little out of adjustment. Thermometer was on the money as referenced with boiling water. Will probably have to wait for warmer temps to adjust the lid or does it matter?

A little over/underbite is no big deal. Close the lid on a dollar bill in a few places. If it pulls freely, adjust. If there's resistance. Carry on.
