To use wood chunks on prime rib?

Last Christmas I did not use any wood chunks when I did prime rib. I was thinking about adding maybe one chunk of wood this year. Should I stay away from piece of wood? Or use one? If so what type of wood

I usually use a chunk of oak with my prime rib, you dont want to overpower the great flavor the rib roast already has though._________________________________________________Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story!Large BGE 2006, Mini Max 2014, 36" Blackstone, Anova Sous Vide

One chunk of cherry“There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body.”

I like cherry with everything, gives a really nice color.

Is it time to start the Hackberry string? Wonderful fruitwood, very abundant in the south fabulous flavor BUT... 1 chunk on this fine meat.

I am firmly in the no wood smoke for prime rib category. If I were to add wood it would be oak.

Only oak I can get comes in the Jack Daniels chunks and chips. I do use a chunk or handful of chips with the rib roast cook.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Or Tabasco barrel chips. They were Jack Daniels barrels for a couple of batches then enhancedSteve

@Little Steven - Just toured their facilities on Avery Island a couple of weeks ago. Turns out that while they use Jack Daniels barrels they don't feed to the chipper very often. What follows comes from an email I received from them a few days later following up on some questions:
"1. We get our supply of barrels from Jack Daniels.
2. Barrels are reused for many years, sometimes up to 70 - 80 years. At the end of their life cycle - we chop up the wood to make wood chips."
No wonder the Tabasco chips are hard to find.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint. -
They told me that Jack Daniels uses the barrels for two batches and Tabasco uses them for ten. That would be a lot of years
