Xl egg on covered porch?

just moved into a new house and wondering if should egg on the porch, or put it in the mud for now on some pavers.  Long term plan is a patio with table, but need something to cook through the winter.

is it safe under the roof?  The ceiling is white.  Will the smoke discolor it?  The ceiling is 9 ft tall.

any input appreciated.

thanks in advance

I would move it the edge and you should be good to go..
  • I don't think safety would be an issue, but I wouldn't be shocked if you get some discoloration on the ceiling. Of course you could re-paint the ceiling black or just re-paint it white every year.

  • You will be fine. Like others have said, you will get black soot on the ceiling. I have my egg under a metal pan roof against the house. So the smoke hits the pan roof and soffit area. I do have black soot, but not too bad. You can clean that black soot with some sodium hydroxide/ water diluted. Start weak strength and work up to stronger. Don't let it set too long or else it will eat into the paint.

  • Thanks guys.

if I just cook on it there until spring, think will still build up soot?

No. Ive had mine under the roof I listed above in same spot for almost 4 years. Its faintly black/brownish. Not an eye sore yet, I see it..

I consider it a battle wound from the Egg :)

If you put it near the edge of the overhang and downwind, most smoke will be carried away.  This is exactly what I do when I cook underneath a pop up canopy in rain.

  • Other option is to get a small fan and point it above the egg so it blows all the smoke in the direction you choose. This is what I do when I first light my egg or throw on some wood for smoking.

  • I have the identical setup. No smoke damage on ceiling. Enjoy grilling even in  rain or snow

  • Thanks a lot guys.

was afraid of damaging new home.

think I'll put it there until the spring, then decide what to do from there
  • Repaint the ceiling a nice gray color and Egg on brother!

Mine has been under roof with a white ceiling for at least a year and a half. No noticeable discoloration.

I've had my grills, smokers, and now BGE under a white porch roof for years.  Yes, eventually the ceiling over the grill will discolor.  Home Depot has a clorox-like cleaner you screw onto the end of your garden hose and spray.  It will clean the coloring if you do it once or twice a year.  I've used plain old diluted bleach to also work.  But frankly, after a few years I quit.  I just consider the ceiling "seasoned".  A badge of honor.  You did say it was your house... right?

I use my egg inside our covered back porch all the time with no issues at all.
