OT - Recommended Upright Freezer?
Star_TrEGG
Posts: 111
My generous mother-in-law would like to get me a Christmas gift and I'm considering an upright freezer (~20 cu ft) to be placed in my garage for all the great future deals on meats from SRF, Restaurant Depot and Costco. I've reviewed previous threads on upright freezers and I'm considering the Frigidaire FFFH21F6QW or FGVU21F8QF because I like the idea of a front digital panel. Any Eggheads with experience on these models, or have any other recommendations? Really appreciate your insight.

We have 2 upright Frigidaire freezers in our basement - both with a digital panel.
"His" Freezer model GLFH21F8HWG - 20,5 cubic feet - 3.5 years old
"Hers" Freezer model LFFH17F7HWH - 16.5 cubic feet - 4.5 years old
Both have performed very well with no problems. They are both frost free and I have never seen any evidence that the frost free feature has caused any harm to the food stored in them. We do keep both freezers very full almost all the time.

In the past 43 years we have owned only 2 upright freezers so we certainly have gotten our moneys worth! The first was a monkey ward and this current one is a Sears. Both have resided in our unheated/uncooled garages. While I can't help you with your question I'm just stating I'm a fan of uprights. If and when this Sears bites the dust I probably will pop for one that is insulated and meant for a garage location.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

@Shiff Wow, you have two upright freezers? You probably saved so much money on discounted meats! Both are really nice freezers but they're now discontinued. I believe the Frigidaire models I cited could be the successors. Anyways it's good to know your freezers are performing well and their frost-free feature don't appear to effect the foods.Shiff said:We have 2 upright Frigidaire freezers in our basement - both with a digital panel.

@RRP Talk within the business community is that Sears may fold after the holiday season or sometime next month. Two of their senior execs departed right in the middle of holiday season, which isn't a good sign. Suppliers are also limiting what they provide Sears anticipating a near future bankruptcy. I'll definitely keep my eye open for some potential "Out of Business" sales.RRP said:In the past 43 years we have owned only 2 upright freezers so we certainly have gotten our moneys worth! I have a Frigidaire 1 year old, don't know the model off hand, but it can be used as a freezer or a fridge. No problems.

In the near past I was told by a very reliable source that Whirlpool made Sears freezers for years and years. As for Sears going belly up that has been the rumor for quite some time now.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
@Eggscuses I've heard that Frigidaire upright freezers tend to have small, shallow drip pans that spills water. Is this an issue with your freezer?Eggscuses said:I have a Frigidaire 1 year old, don't know the model off hand, but it can be used as a freezer or a fridge. We have a old Norge that we bought 12 years ago for $30. The family that was moving dad into a nursing home. It was at least 25 years old when we bought it and it's still humming away in our garage today.

@abpgwolf Seems like the freezers these days don't last as long as they did back then.abpgwolf said:We have a old Norge that we bought 12 years ago for $30. No that's never happened, that I've noticed, but I'm not down there with it all the time either.Star_TrEGG said:

Has an alarm for the door. Not sure if the alarm is tied to temp or just time on extended open door.
