Remote thermometer recommendation?

I've been using Taylor remote probe thermometers for years.  They are relatively cheap and available locally but they almost routinely need to be replaced for one reason or another.  I'd hate to think about how many I have purchased through the years.

I figure it's about time to get something better.  I was leaning towards a Maverick ET-732 (primarily due to it's popularity) but I see that the online reviews are all over the place on it.

What do you use or what would you suggest?

Thanks!

    ^^^^^ Exactly.

Thermoworks quality is leaps above Maverick.

  • The older 732 maverick is, imho, easier to manage than the newer 733 with all the extra buttons. Range is shallower, though. Also, battery life in the receiver of the 733 is maybe 1/10th the damn older model, which is maddening.

You can find them here or there for around $40 shipped so keep, your eyes open.

Tappecue is expensive ($200 or so) but if you are looking for wifi connectivity it does an excellent job.  Ive had mine for a year and used several times.  Its never let me down and on long cooks I can leave the house stress free!

I would add that if one is looking to spend a couple hundred on a remote read another option to consider is the Fireboard - https://www.fireboard.com/

It started as a Kickstarter project and it is the only Kickstarter project I've backed that actually delivered not only on time but early!

Just got mine today. Early impressions are that I think I'm in love. :)

Haven't used it "for real" yet - just setting it up and charging the battery. Have just 4 probes plugged in at the moment and all the probes are registering within a couple tenths of °F.

The probes seem to be well made and have 6ft cables! I like that. One of my disappointments with the Smoke is that the cables need to be longer (for me anyway). Fireboard also sells 6ft extension cables if needed. That will be handy when I have multiple cookers fired up.

The Fireboard has 6 probe ports so you can mix and match grate or meat probes as needed. That too will be handy when I have multiple cookers fired up.

Another neat feature of the Fireboard is that it has an auxiliary port that will allow it to control a blower fan in the future if one wants that capability down the road.

Of course being new to the market it could turn out to be a piece of crap in the longevity department but only time will tell.

Wow!  That looks like one hell of a great setup right there!!  The probes even look like they were actually designed to be over fire!!!  Go figure!!!!

cant wait to hear how you like the way it works.
