It has been discussed several times. So if you want the long lively discussion, you can read through the old discussions. You can use the table nest on the wood without anything more. This was the set up on my table for quite a while and never had a problem. However, adding a layer of fire brick below the table nest will provide more protection. The is no definitive answer. It is a matter of your fire safety comfort. Consider the location of the table - is it on a cement patio or a wood deck attached to the house? Think of the possible consequences if the egg failed and dumped hot coals. Consider the cost to increase the fire safety and make your call.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
If mine were on wood, I would lay something below it too. I have debated it even using my challenger cart.

It won't be on a deck or too close to anything that will catch fire. If bge has it on wood on their cart ... well that tells me something !

I used ceramic tile inlaid into the table with steel beams under it. It does get warm under the egg. I would not do mine straight on the wood.Aledo, Texas
