Thermoworks Smoke has arrived.

FedEx dropped off my new Smoke thermometer this afternoon.

Unboxed, removed all the protective plastics, plugged in the probes, turned on the remote.

The probes, after a couple minutes to let things stabilize, read within a °F of each other. The probe connector ports do have a slightly squishy material around the jack opening so that should prevent rain from being a problem while in use.

The remote is bigger than I had pictured in my head. The current temps are displayed in a large enough size that I can read them sans reading glasses so that's a good thing.

The backlight on the remote is nice and evenly lit and stays on for about 20 seconds.

The range. This seems to be something that many people are expecting great things from this unit. For me, my den is right next to my patio so the signal only has to travel 20 feet thru one wall or french doors. I have never had any problems with any remote thermo staying connected at that distance/location.

The Smoke is no different - it connects just fine. Just for testing I did go around to the front of my house and stood in front of my garage door (2 inch insulated steel) which is about 60 feet and ...no connection. I sorta expected that. Some people may experience better connectivity with the Smoke over some other devices they've used before, some may not notice any significant difference. It all really depends on how much "stuff" is in the way

The grate probe is not rated for really high heat so some folks may need to pay attention to that. For my uses the probe will never see temps above 400°F so that is no problem.

I won't be able to put into actual use for a week or so but at the moment it seems like a solid unit and likely worth the extra bucks over some of the Maverick units.

Nice writeup.  Really love my Chef Alarm, but hoping they run a sale on the Smoke around the holidays.  May even buy a second Chef Alarm if the price is right.  They are handy to have around for pit temps, frying.

    Mine should be here Wednesday!

  • I also had mine arrive. Opened it up, it connected within a few seconds of turning on. I used mine and had no lost connection problems. I tested the calibration and it was within 1 degree of my Thermapen. Mine read through several walls and out into the lower yard. I could see how different areas might interfere with the signal depending on the interference in your surroundings. However mine has worked perfectly since I've been using it. I've been pretty happy with it so far!!
