Is the Platesetter needed......

My brother is getting a L for Christmas from his wife. My wife and I are going to buy him a pswoo, adjustable rid and stone. Will his wife need to purchase the Platesetter if I'm getting him all that? Side note I'm getting my woo and rig for Christmas also.

With a large, the platesetter is not compatable with the woo or adjustable rig.  Save your money.
Edit:  Use pizza stones or the Oval stone from CGS.  I guess you won't save your money after all!

    Probably not.

I have an AR and it's a little sketchy to balance it on the woo, so I use with a spider instead (stone on that). So for indirect, I run two grids and a drip pan on the AR and the stone on the spyder.

I don't have any of that stuff, but I thought if you had a rig, you didn't need the woo. Either way, you don't need a platesetter.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I agree you she probably doesn't need a plate setter. I also agree with Q- I don't see a reason you need a woo and an adjustable rig. Maybe you are thinking of the spider + rig?

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Pswoo2 with the plate setter and the Pswoo2 extender for me. Adjustable rig if you need more flexibility but uses stones instead of plate setter.

If you don't have the platesetter, you have lots of options. I started with the platesetter in my first egg and bought platesetters along the way for my other eggs. I didn't discover the AR and the Woo until after I had the platesetters.

I use the PSWoo2CI with the platesetter way more than the AR. That's just what works for me.  I use the CI grate on it sparingly though as I hate the CI grate and wish I had another regular grate instead of the CI one (my egg was a demo and that's what it came with). I actually like that the platesetter due to the three legs provides a little more indirect space round the edge on some of my cooks.

At the end of the day, you will learn what you like and it may be different from what works for others. Just keep cookin!

It depends on where you want the stone. For me, these days, I want to run two grids on my AR for food and my drip pan, then I place my stone on the spider.  I have woo and a place setter, but this is my go to setup. I like a big space between the stone and the drip pan.

Perhaps more importantly, with this setup I can cook with the stock grid amd have three levels as the AR can sit on the stock grid with the drip pan on the stone (see the second picture when my AR was brand new!)

If I'm not mistaken @J-dubya set up works in an XL but not the large that the OP ask about but I could be wrong.

@arkysmokin - I don't think you can use the Woo and the AR at the same time in the large. I think it is either or.  Depending on the volume of food you are looking to cook the Woo and the extender is what I use.  This in conjunction with the PS or a stone will get you two levels of cooking and when you remove the PS or stone it will get you raised direct at gasket level or approximately 3 3/4" above gasket.

The only way I can do 3 grid levels (large egg) that I can figure out is with the stone on the spider, then stock grid on the fire ring. Then AR with grid in the middle and the AR extender with a grid on the top. Used that setup a couple of weeks ago to smoke some bacon.

This. But I also could be wrong. I have a plate setter and a pswoo2. Never seen an adjustable rig in person.

  • Thank you all for the information!! My brother is getting a Large while I currently own a XL. As it gets closer to Christmas I'll give the CGS a call so I can get exactly what is needed.
