OT: Moving trees rather than cutting them down: :OT

37 years ago when building in virgin forestry I opted to have 14 trees in the 35 to 50 year range moved from areas where our spetic field was going plus our basement. Only oaks, hickories and maples and one cherry tree were chosen. This guy shown here moving firs was silly as they are a short lived tree any way. Of the 14 trees moved 11 have lived and done quite well. Cost to move just 2 trees was less than buying 14 new trees! Besides our related ones were already accustomed to the soil conditions, slope etc. This is one "thinking already" suggestion you might want to consider if applicable to your building plans.

@RRP - I have had a few adult beverages tonight but every time I read the above as I close in on the finish it reads like you paid to move 2 tress (and in the beginning mentioned 14) for less than buying 14 new trees.  I may be moving into LEO but I can't figure it out.  ;)  I skimmed the linked video so maybe you are referring to today $$ but I missed it.  FWIW-

I was just planting a seed in some one's mind. Toal cost to transfer these was $650. Instead I would have probably paid to have those trees cut down then had to buy up to 14 trees, have the same tree shade nursery come back and plant new trees! My trees were FREE so to speak and far better than the nursery grown stock of a size I could not afforded. Now that make sense to you?

i think it takes an act of congress to cut done a tree here, they wont let me even cut down a dead tree over 4 inches diameter or even a limb hitting the roof if its over 20 foot up. i have two massive pines on the edge of the leach field that need to disappear some cold wintry night.

the beavers are doing their job with the maples on the property, just have to keep the blueberries fenced in.  they dont want anything to do with the 100 foot pines ;)

There has to be a way to do this and the beaver takes the rap.

its serious business in maine on shoreline property, 100 feet from shore or closer. i think they send out forensic teams and try to locate the beaver for teeth imprints =) they can afford it, the fine for limbing a tree 1 foot over 20 foot high is around 40,000 dollars. pine trees must be pretty rare in the pine tree state :o

Perhaps I should start out all over again. I have a nicely wooded lot with natural growth. Where I intended to place the home and spetic field has some small trees but at least 14 nice ones in the 35 to 50 year range, which is far and above the age of those container trees sold. So the idea is to mark the trees I wanted moved plus place a stake to where it will go. The tree-spade guy comes in and digs the first divet and sets that plug aside. Then he goes and digs up the first tree and plants it in the inital hole. He keeps up this up until all 14 trees have been transplanted.

Or some old disgruntled Bama Fan. They're good at making trees go away.
  • Which team has the craziest fans? My guess is Bama. One of them poisons the trees at Auburn's Toomer's corner, and was dumb enough to call a sports radio program and admit it. A 32 year old fan rubbed his berries on a passed out LSU fan. Not a garden variety 18 year old idiot. A 32 year old!! Two years ago at a "watch party" for the Bama-Auburn game, one woman was upset that another woman was not upset enough over the loss that she shot and killed the other woman. A fantastic team in the Bear days, and again now, but what is with the fans? If there is another fan base that deserves the crown, please, let me know.

We lost many very mature pines from an herbicide application. This was a nationwide issue and we received a settlement to replace the damaged trees. Problem is, even with the 100" tree spade, you can only get a tree so big and we had to settle for smaller trees then we had. The new trees were still bigguns. Downside to these huge trucks is they are basically a semi tractor and very heavy. They had to come on our property twice for each tree. Once to remove old and again for the replacement new tree and man, do they leave deep ruts!
