Gorgeous setting and table, congrats. It's hard to tell from the photos, but you should think about getting an air gap between the bottom of the Egg and the paver it's sitting on. Overtime, repeated exposure of the wood below the paver to the heat transferred through the paver will eventually lead to a fire. You can get a table nest from your dealer, get some planter pot feet from Lowe's, etc. You only need an inch or so to prevent catastrophe.

Several folks on this forum have had near misses due to this.

Google pyrolysis for more info on this.

I've seen several tables in the same format as mine...are you saying I need a nest to rest upon the paver I have on the bottom?

Beautiful. Also make sure you have enough of a gap between the egg and the wood (the hole you cut to place it in), probably 1/4 to 1/2 inch

Yes, you need an air gap between the bottom of the Egg and the paver it's sittting on. Read this article over on nakedwhiz.com for more info:

I would hate to see that nice table and composite deck go up in flames due to something that is easily prevented.

I am more worried about the gap at the table top. You want to have a good half inch gap atleast all the way around the egg. If you get the table nest and raise the egg it may increase the gap enough but being on what appears to be a wood deck attached to your house it would scare me. About 5 or so years ago my table caught fire at the table level cause I had a small gap like what I see in your picture.

I had the same thought, but I was thinking the air gap a time the bottom might give enough gap at the top.

That is definitely at tiny gap at the table top. I'd open that up a little. I put an aluminum ring on mine to act as a heat shield. It has a gap between the egg and between the table top.

I'm thinking I might get another paver to put at the bottom, which would raise it up and increase the table gap...thoughts?

A secnod paver would be good to give you a larger air gap where it comes through the top, but you still need an air gap under the Egg. Two pavers would only cause it to take longer before it started charring the wood below.

I have seen on different videos the "egg feet"...in your opinion, would that create a sufficient enough gap?

It should, but I don't think they are sold any longer. Maybe go with some ceramic planter stands from Lowes or Home Depot:

I would just use a table nest on top of the paver.

What size paver are you using? Does the outside perimeter of the egg fit on it or is it hanging over on all sides with all the weight resting on the center bottom of it?

  • The table looks really fantastic. I'm sure you don't want to give up the cleaner look, but agree with others who suggest the necessary air gaps.

Here is the thread I was looking for. This member lost most of his house and belongings due to a fire that most likely started in his Egg table. Thankfully no one was hurt.

    http://eggheadforum.com/discussion/1166805/pyrophoric-charring-alternate-title-why-did-my-house-burn-down/p1

Not trying to sound like a broken record, but I would hate to see another forum member suffer a loss like this when it is so easily preventable.

You're right, I didn't realize he was talking about an XL. Go with the table nest to be sure.
