OT: Pelican 35qt test

Over the summer in the Dells, thought one of my Pelicans was warped, have replaced one already that will be put back into service as a bait box or ftc at some point.  Pelican stepped up and delivered on their lifetime warranty.

Anyhoo, wanted to test, prechilled 18 hrs before starting with 20lbs each.

So not too bad, despite some milder anbients for this time of year.  Looks like I may be able to stretch 4 or 5 days.  Nowhere near Pelican's 10 day claim.  Which is good enough over a long weekend for me. And I chose not to use my xl chillin brews or frozen water bottles in case all this documentation needed to go to Pelican.

Now looking back in hindsight, I think my issues were....I was drunk, I loaded pi$$ warm Spotted Cow,  and said cooler sat in a SUV during the hottest time of the day.  :)
Peace of mind I guess running this test.

Would be interested to hear from you southern guys, and what you are getting out of your hybrids, and how you're doing it.

For those looking at these coolers, please be aware that they do not come close in reality to their claims of performance, even with prechilling, using arctic ice chillin brews, and frozen water bottles.

I will continue to post pics until melted.
HTH and thanks.

I got tired of how small the usable space of these coolers turns out to be (Pelican 45 + RTIC 20 in the garage), and how heavy they are when filled up. Bought an Igloo Maxcold Glide 110, which has wheels and claims to hold ice for 6 days. Cost about $90 at Costco.

Ice lasts about as long as they claim, and its easy to move around. Huge capacity for eggfests and such. I'm not a hunter/boater/fisherman so this works great for weekend trips and fests. Easy to move too, since its wheeled.

Thanks man!  Figured if I was in the vicinity of New Glarus, it was a no brainer.  Down to one case left for a NFL Sunday KBQ sesh.

Would love to check out their brewery.  May have to head up to the Dells a little early next year.  ;)

I'm with ya my friend.  I have a 120qt Igloo ATC cooler with big wheels, goes over just about any surface in 2HI. Works nice for the big trips.

For even most camping, fishing, hunting, those Igloo "5 day" marine coolers( and similar brands) will suffice.  The extra couple of days from the hybrids does eliminate a normal ice run.

My Pelicans will still get heavy use.  Load them in the truck empty, then fill.  They stay in the truck during the trip.  And no draining at the end of a trip when using the chillin brews.  A manageable work around.

We use a variety of types and sizes of coolers on 5-6 day fishing trips on the Tx coast.  We have an ice maker, but it's not potable water feeding it.  The big, roto-molded coolers carry and hold the always critical drink ice we bring with us.  We also use them for holding any food that has to be kept cold but can't be sitting on or in melting ice.  Usually a large pelican sits on a boat with a load of ice that we keep adding beer and bottled water to each day - and we can sit and stand on it.

The two biggest factors for keeping cooler contents cold that I've seen are 1) opening/closing frequency and duration, and 2) how full you keep the cooler.
    Love you bro!

I really like my Pelican 45qt. Even with FL summer temps it has done well. The door gasket and latch closures are well made. The threaded drain is nice also. It mainly serves as a beverage overflow vessel.

    And other stuff occasionally

Well that's a wrap.  A tiny bit of ice in #2, water is still cold in both.

Blake, how long are you getting with your 45 in FL?  Is 4 days close?  Thanks.

@focker  If I pre-chill it and then load up with cold beverages and pack in Sonic nugget ice I've seen 7-10 days. It sits on the Lanai in the shade 99% of the time. Even with high humidity and crazy hot temperatures it does quite well. If it's in the back of my truck indirect sunlight it does get affected differently but not a drastic difference. Also I might add using nugget ice seems to get more days then using regular ice. Why? I would say because the nugget ice fills in all the voids that regular ice would not have. Not  mention Sonic ice is magical

@Focker I'm not sure....  it's a perk of doing service there.
....just called one up the road from me & it's $1.92 per #10. Pretty reasonable.

New Glarus is a neat little town. When I took a self-guided tour of the brewery about 15 years ago I told a woman working there that I wish we could find it in Minnesota. She said they were working on it and that it should happen in the near future.

They have a great product and it looks like business is going well for them, so I can't blame them for not expanding. It probably makes a nice marketing hook to only be available in Wisconsin.

The last time I bought some in Chippewa Falls the woman asked me if I was from Minnesota. I asked how she knew and she said 90 percent of the people buying New Glarus from her store are from Minnesota.

Thought I was the only guy here needing to turn in my man card. Have 2 Yatis (45 & Roadie) that are just heavy for me. Heading to Yellowstone now and both are in the van but am using a polar bear.
