Cowboy Lump Charcoal Sale at Lowe's.....
FWRealtor
Posts: 57
I was at Lowe's last night and they have 18 lb bags of Cowboy Lump Charcoal on sale for $9.99 a bag. I've never used that brand before but it looks like it has mixed reviews. Is this something I should stock up on?

Try a bag and see if you like it. I'm not a fan. Lots of sparks when lighting and real HEAVY on smoke. Some here don't mind it. It's probably something like 90% would say no and the other 10% would be a yes."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

i use it all the time.
it doesn't smoke or spark any more than any other lump i have ever used.
maybe they hip the good stuff to us and everyone else gets the crap.
though i have had crap bags of most any brand.

I'm in the middle of a bag now. Wife brought in home from the supermarket because it was on sale and she had an E-coupon. I'm with Darby on this one, no issues. Works fine. Stuff has a bad reputation, but maybe the company cleaned up its act?

it isn't.
in reality, they use wood scrap culled during manufacture, both of oak flooring, and hardwood S4S ('surfaced four sides", i.e. planed dimension lumber).
random length flooring is random length because they cut out those short sections of knots, and reject that from the finished flooring.
cowboy uses that, and the same sort of thing trimmed off maple lumber, for much of its production.
upshot (for me) is it is light, burns hot, lights quickly, and bridges a lot of gaps... you get pieces that are thin but three or four inches long. perfect compromise (for me) of light stuff but large enough to promote air flow.
also, have never had a twenty pound bag that didn't weigh 22+ pounds, and which wasn't totally filled to the top.
there's a tendency to bash it. but give it time. it is all circular. there isn't a manufacturer that hasn't been praised/hated/praised/hated every few years.
as for sparking, rocks, etc. well, show me a manufacturer that doesn't have that every now and then, and you've got yourself a unicorn

I've used it with no problems, other than the pieces are on the smallish side. Other than that, it works!

I'm using Rockwood based on all the recommendations here but I have used cowboy in the past and I actually probably can't tell a difference. I think I'm probably just not as discerning as most. Everything I have used burns fine. I blast it with the weedeater and it all sparks.LBGE, Minimax

I don't think the question is "Is Rockwood better than Cowboy?" I'm convinced it is. The question is "Will I regret picking up some bags of Cowboy when it is on sale?". For me the answer to that question is definitely "no". I've cooked some great meals with Cowboy and other "bad" lump.
But, I'm a guy who once cooked a meal in a shoebox because someone here challenged me to do so. Where is @henapple anyway?

I have found a couple of pieces of cowboy lump that I could tell was made from moulding or baseboard. That was years ago. Cowboy is more expensive in my area, so I just get Royal oak , or Carbon Del Sur when they are on sale. Cowboy was a little sparky , but definitely does not smoke any worse than RO at start up .IMOMore meat please !! :-)

I've found a few weird things in bags of cowby (random large thin metal and aluminum pieces) but the charcoal itself I thought was fine. It creates more "black smoke" than BGE brand charcoal but overall I was fine with how it performed.
FYI, Large bags (20lbs I think) of Royal Oak lump are being sold at the walmart I just went to (Franklin, TN). Supposedly it's exactly the same as BGE brand lump.Large BGE - Nashville, TN -

I had the misfortune of buying a bag of Fresh Market lump which is Cowboy private label. It was crap. When I opened the bag there was a burnt up metal bracket sitting right on top. The lump burned fast, created a lot of ash and did not last any where close to Royal Oak or Rockwood. My favorite is Rockwood when I can get it but the Royal Oak does well too.One large BGE in Louisville, KY.

Cowboy lump sucks, Donald Trump is an egomaniac, Hillary is a compulsive liar, you'll get your RTIC when you get it, and the fat cap goes down.
