New to BGE & Forum

Hi, Everyone!  New to the BGE and the forum.  My father in-law passed away earlier this year.  He had owned this BGE for about 5 or 6 years from what I can remember; used it 3 at least 3 to 5 times a week during the summer, not much in winter. He kept it covered, but outside on his deck in Western MI.  I inherited the egg this spring when my mother in-law graciously offered it to me.  It's in ok shape and I have used it 3 times so far in last week since I got it home and set up, but I have some questions and concerns.  The gasket, definitely needs to be replaced, which is the least of my concern.  The two main issues is the outer finish on the back of the grill and the flaking on the inside.  I tried to scrape some of the flakes off on the inside, but it is very rough under the flaking material.  Almost like the inside finish is coming off with the char.  That does not seem normal as all the pics that I have seen on the forum have nice blackened and smooth dome interiors.  My question is, since I did not purchase this egg, nor can my mother in-law find any paperwork pertaining to the purchase (she does not even remember the dealer it was bought from) it there anything I can do as far as a warranty claim?  If not, what would you recommend?  Is there a good touch-up paint for the outside.  Should I just leave the flaking material alone on the inside and not mess with it?

Welcome Andy. Sorry about the passing of your father in law.

I can't help concerning the outside, but it sounds like you should do a clean burn to clean out the inside. Post a few pics of the inside in case it is something other than normal build up.

@RRP can help you with your gasket replacement. You will want to do a clean burn BEFORE you install a new gasket.

Someone will come along shortly and offer advice on the peeling problem.

I would take the photos and go with her to a dealer and pursue the claim. Just tell them that her husband passed and you can't remember the dealer. I don't see much of an issue.

yeah, you've certainly got some chipping/flaking that would normally be replaced under warranty (I think). Nothing wrong with asking about warranty but in case that doesn't fly, i'm not seeing that there is anything that would prevent you from using "as-is". You could monitor Craiglist for a dome, or save up --and if you really get into egging, buy yourself a new dome. Also, If you contact BGE HQ, they may be able to send you some green paint. (Bruce at HQ is very helpful). It won't look "new" but will look better than today.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  A difficult way to join the forum but you are in the right place for advice-and you may get too much of it, depending on the topic at-hand.

Welcome aboard Andy. Sorry  about your FIL. Enjoy the twisted egghead world. Seems that reasonable and good advice has already been delivered. I see no reason this couldn't or shouldn't be a warranty claim. Clearly it isn't from misuse or abuse.   Let us know how it works out for you.

I'm not sure I've seen chipping that bad.  It's certainly not user error.  I don't think you will have a hard time finding a dealer that will work with you on the warranty.

If it was bought locally up there, I can't imagine there would be a ton of them around.

Thanks, guys.  I have a dealer in town so I'll swing by with the pics and see what they have to say.  Either way, I've been using it and will continue to use it as is.  Been getting great results and it holds temp perfectly even with a burned up gasket.  I did chicken parts indirect at 400, chicken fajitas direct the other night, and NY strip at 700.  Probably need to replace the gasket before I try some ribs, though.

Eggnation offers its condolences to your family.   As to warr claim, if you can find out where he got it and then appeal to that dealer you may have a chance.  If not consider some high temp glaze or sealer on it as the chipping and flaking cant be good for the long term utility of the egg.

but it sounds like your father in law was great, cooking on BGE several time s week so there is no more fitting teibute to him than to carry his tradition on.  Did he post here on the bge forum?  If so it could give you.a cluenas to wherw he may have gotten his egg from.

He was not on the forum and unfortunately no idea where he bought the egg.  I'm going to bring pics into my local dealer and see what they say.

I sincerely hope that they take care of you. I really do. And I agree, the flaking is not normal.  Regardless, BGE warranty is not transferable. An inheritance is a transfer of property to new ownership.

I will be curious to see what the outcome of this is.   Best of luck!

Exactly why I suggest having the warranty issue on behalf of the mother in law.
