Anybody moved a big safe before?
I'm looking at a new gun safe that will be anywhere from 700-1100 LBs. has anybody ever moved something like this? I don't really want to cough up $700 more for in home delivery when I can pick it up from the store. I have to go up 3 steps and then it's flat from there. I have looked at appliance Dolly's but there weight limits usually aren't enough. And I can seem to find somewhere to rent one. Any suggestions?

how far are you moving it and do you have to go up light stairs? Or concrete?

I have rented appliance dollys from Home Depot. (Not all Home Depots have tool/equipment rental though) I think they had around an 800 lbs capacity.
With that weight/wheel combination you might want to consider putting something down to protect your floors as well.smak

I would definitely go with the hand truck epcotisbest suggested. Maybe his 3 healthy nephews could help too.

We had one delivered by a moving company. It had to be moved down a short but treacherous hill to get to our basement door in the back. We hired a moving company separately and they charged us a flat $250, which was much cheaper than what the store would have charged for delivery from the factory to our house (it was delivered to the store for free and that is where the movers picked it up). I would make a few calls, as it was money well spent. Good luck.Eggin' with a Large and SmallTwin Cities, MN

Just make sure you take out any adjustable shelves before it's moved. I was lazy when moving mine, shelves fell and anything on them all over the place inside. I did remove the guns before tho.

I took the door off of mine when I moved it. Helped somewhat. Don't think there's an easy way though.Bill Denver, CO

I moved a 700lb safe up 15 stairs this spring. We did it with a heavy duty dolly and 3 people( we had a 4th but wasn't really room for him). Pad and strap the safe to the dolly( we did the ratchet on the dolly and did another couple ratchet straps for piece of mind). The 2 people on the bottom would lift and the person on top would pull. There were a lot of breaks involved. Your other option is renting a motorized lift dolly. We didn't have this option since we had to make a corner on a landing and it was to big. The motorized dollies shouldn't have a problem lifting that weight. Hope that helps.

i have a dolly like the one posted, they work well. but if you can figure how to get it over the stairs 2 of these might work, they come in different sizes and wheel heights. if you can back the truck up to the stairs, maybe unload it at the top

Moved mine into the bedroom (2nd story) to get it up, I had 2 other guys, a car jack to turn it on the landing, and a heavy duty dolly. Still put a dent in the ceiling when it shifted.... but it was only 1127 lbs. If I ever move, someone is getting a new safe with the houseWhat I do when I'm black out drunk is none of my business...

Not sure where you are located but look into an airsled rental. Won't help with the steps but will make the flat area painfree.Egging year 'round in North Dakota

Figure out how much your medical deductible is, the amount to fix the floor, the wall touch up, then pay to have it delivered. You'll save money in the long run, and your back!! LOL!1

Had mine moved 5 years ago for I think $400. Very large safe like yours. Was really glad I did not attempt it on the cheap and all I have is one door threshold to deal with. Outside of the weight the thing that would have very likely messed me up would have been getting it through the double doors and into the room. The top had to be dropped down far enough to clear the door that the bottom was way out into the room. Left nearly no room to maneuver the safe into place.
If I ever move someone else will be dealing with it or it's staying put. -

how about a moving ramp over the stairs?

If this guy could move 14 ton blocks of coral by himself, I think a little ingenuity and a couple furniture dollies will do the trick.

My original idea was get a helicopter, learn to fly it, cut a hole in the ceiling and drop it in. Then I have a helicopter and a safe but the wife didn't go for it.

Golf balls for tight spots, about 12 or 15 golf balls can move anything and you barely have to lift it to get them under, won't help with the steps though!

My safe was delivered buy the guy who I bought the safe from. Delivery charge was $75.00. He used a battery powered baggage cart. It was pretty slick. Took him 10 mins to get it in my basement. Had to go up two steps. The cart did it all. If you lived in central PA I could hook you up. But...I'm sure there's similar people everywhere with this type cart.XLBGE

I have an 80 x 24 x30 1200# safe that has been been moved 6 times, always by professionals. It was well worth the expense - frequently it took 4-5 guys working for hours to get it into second floor apartments or up stairs in a townhouse, and there were hairy moments when they lost control. Slickest move was by safe retailer I bought it from - he used a device as pictured in post by nhk19. It just walked up the steps slick as you please! If you have to negotiate steps, don't try it yourself---
