We have success. Scroll to the DNS, enter 255 for the first three digits, hit enter four times. Power off. Plug into router. Power on. Check IP address, put in browser and viola!!

Woot! Woot!  I can hear the Rocky theme music now......I was just getting ready to post steps as I got mine up and running as a test.

Now, i plug my Stoker into my Airport Express and that is how it connects wireless to my network.  I used to have my AE in my kitchen and run the ethernet to my Stoker via the kitchen window.  Anyway, give the wireless a try.

Oh yea, check you DNS entry on your Stoker now.  I think having the Stoker IP to all 000s is what allows your DHCP server to assign the Stoker whatever IP is up next.  Going from memory here.

Started off with the Airpot. It assigned an IP. Switched to the century link and it changed the IP. Finally hooked it up to bridge and it changed the IP again. I didn't have to change anything other then the address I put into the browser. Didn't check to see where the DNS ended up at if it was all zeros or still at 255. Going to keep it married to the bridge hoping the IP will stay the same.
Went and named all of the blowers and sensors as the other set of them made it in yesterday. Going to check the calibration on them this weekend and I should be good to go for my big cook on the 27/28th. (If I can get my table finished for the XL)

You guys have me inspired. I bought a used Stoker a year or so ago and never got it fully figured out. I could get it connected to wifi for 45 minutes than my computer or Stoker would drop the signal for some reason. Our laptop's are slower than molasses. They make better paper weights than they do serving as laptop's. I'm guessing it had something to do with the laptop. I'm going to pick up a newer laptop today more less to see if I can get this Stoker going. Definitely will be picking your guys brain as I know nothing about computers. Thanks for the inspiration!

Within your router you can use a DHCP reservation.  This means your router will reserve a specific IP address for a particular device.  It knows the device by the MAC address. I did this for a bunch of devices on my network...including my Stoker.  This is important if you eventually want to have remote access to your Stoker.

interested why DNS would cause the stoker not to connect to the network. Really the only thing ANY DNS server does is correlate a name to an IP address...I.E. Ping www.google.com and it will reply with an IP address. the DNS is making that relationship between the name and IP....ANYWHO..who gives a $#!+..I work on end results and if your stoking, then your good...

I'm with you.  I don't believe that had anything to do with the resolution. I think setting the IP addy for the Stoker to all 000 is what allows the home network DHCP assign it an IP.  If you manually enter something in there the Stoker will assume that is it's IP.  At least he is up and running.  All good.

Honestly I dunno what any of it means. I tried the 255 on IP and nothing happened. Something made me change the DNS one and it worked. Could have been coincidental. I really don't know. It's all Greek to me.

Right now mine is working as a wireless through a bridge I bought from Amazon for 25.00. I can pick it up on my phone as well as my netbook.

Supposedly my you can get it to Tweet updates to you. Not sure what that exactly means, but my kids say it'll basically text me on its own I think. Doing a pool party in a couple of weeks and will have three eggs on the Stoker, I'm going to see how that works out texting tweeting me.

The Galaxy S7. It'll be my first Android. I'll give it a whirl for a week or two to see if I can adjust. I was Blackberry before it

It was totally me that made this difficult, not the stoker. Apparently I had one thing entered wrong and caused myself all the grief.
I went ahead and ordered a Stoker 2 this afternoon. I actually wanted a temp probe and it 'accidentally' fell into my cart.  :)
I got my original second hand from a friend and have since ordered two more blowers and pit sensors, and now a second temp probe so I can run three eggs at once off one box. It's all a learning process for me and I'm horribly inept at computer things and managed to muddle through it.

The new WiFi Stokers are easier in that they do not require a WiFi adapter.  I will say the latest Stoker WiFi 2 is much faster than any of the previous models. The native web page is lightening quick.

I'm pretty sure that's what's on the way next week. They were great people to deal with. Maybe I could do an unboxing and set-up post? Would that be appropriate?

One step closer. A laptop that works. I picked up a newer laptop but couldn't justify a brand new one as I only open my older laptop every few months. Maybe more less a few times a year. My wife uses hers for pictures but both have seen their better days. I just missed the free Windows 10 year long offer by a few weeks but have read a few places that it's still available through some loopholes according to CNET. So I might see if I can update it to Windows 10 yet. It comes with Windows 8.1 which I have read most people would stay with 7 or go up to 10. (I probably wouldn't even know the difference) So I'm going to bring it up to my dads place and have him update it and remove the bloatware off it. I've somewhat figured out what "ram" and "processor speeds" are. (This is how much I don't know about computers) What I kind of picked up is that 4gb of ram is okay but 8gb+ is better. The hard drive didn't matter too much for me as it will see light use and pictures/videos will be saved on external drives. I also didn't worry too much about the processing speed as it's not going to be used real hard or for any gaming. So I found this two year old Toshiba 17" laptop with 8gb ram, 750gb hard drive, and 1.8ghz processor for under 2 bills. I think the processor isn't too great but seems to stream movies and videos without issue. The previous ower said he bought it for online reading but went another route after a few weeks. So the overall condition seems next to new. In all honesty if I can hook it up to my printer and print something I'm in good shape. That's more than my Sony laptop wants to do. If I can get this wifi Stoker figured out I'll be golden! (Go figure I buy something that logs my bbq data but I can't even figure out how to run a laptop! =)) You guys have me inspired!

Hey thanks! I can get the Stoker to run great on wifi but have spent the last 6.5 hours trying to figure out how to port forward my laptop so I can check the Stoker outside the wifi parameters. Having no such luck.....

Rather than buy the probes from Rock's, I would suggest getting their K-type probe adapters and then buy K-type probes from Thermoworks or somewhere similar. The K-type probe braided wires are much better and can handle the heat. It will cost you more but since the wires used by Rock's suck, it's a much better option. I think my wires on the original probes melted enough to short out by the third cook. You can add a braided heat shield to the original wires to help protect them. My K-type probe wires are rated for 950 degrees.

Look at the steel braided wire ones:
