Lump charcoal

Love my egg (6 month owner), but the BGE lump is getting expensive.  My local Home Depot carries Royal Oak Lump.  Is that okay to use, if not any suggestions.

Royal Oak and BGE are the same thing, just rebranded.

Yes, its great lump, affordable, readily available, lights easy and burns long.

You can certainly experiment with some higher end mail order lump that you may like better, but you can't beat the convenience of a dependable bag at your local HD.

  • Thank you!  Can buy two bags of Royal Oak for the one bag of BGE, plus about 3 to 4 times a year HD has it on sale.

I like the Royal Oak. I made the mistake of buying a bag of private label Fresh Market lump and it was crap. Sitting on top in the bag was a metal bracket and the lump burnt really fast with a lot of ash. My preference is Rockwood, but between pallet loads, the Royal Oak is good.

You'll find some bags have bigger pieces than others, but overall, I've never not been able to use a bag and I've bought at least a dozen of them.

I'm pretty sure that Fresh Market is rebranded Cowboy.

In my case, and I think some others, I would use Royal Oak again and it's not as though I hated it, but don't care for it nearly as much as a few other brands which also happen to cost a little more. I think it typically comes down to your tolerance for paying $1 per pound or more for lump, or prefer to pay less and temper expectations accordingly.
