There are a lot of people who roast hatch on here but normally in a fairly fast spinning basket over a full flame.
If you want to try to do on the egg I would do direct and hot and only a couple at a time so you can rotate often.
But someone with more experience will be along soon.Greensboro, NC -
I used to roast my own peppers before the local market started doing it outside in a spinning basket. You want to char the outer skin with out burning the actual flesh of the pepper. I use a moderate temp of about 350. Just keep watching them and turning them to get a nice even roast. It is ok to have some uncharred spots. After roasting them I put them in a zip lock bag that I had filled with water and spilled out. In about 5 to ten minutes, the steam from the peppers and the water droplets loosen the skin and makes pealing it off very easy. Happy Cooking. Nothing much better than fresh roasted Hatch chilies.
