Heavy Rain?

Still a newbie. massive pop up t-storms with really heavy rain began just after I started chicken thighs (indirect to 155, direct skin down to temp for crisp skin). Improvised a rain hat with a grid lifter and the ceramic cap... Nervous the wind/sideways rain was going to blow it off. What's the better answer/technique/tool for heavy rain

I have a table umbrella I put up when needed, it allows me to keep somewhat dry when checking on things. Others have used 6" vent cap that fits nicely over the daisy wheel, or a Smokeware Cap as @dmchicago mentioned.Medium BGE , iGrill2

I use this and works like a dream, fits over the DFMT and can still move the vent opening.

If you're cooking low and slow which means your top vent is likely mostly closed very little rain is actually going to get inside the Egg. The only time I worry about a thunderstorm is when I'm doing a higher heat cook and and do not even have the top vent on.
Last summer we had an evening series of thunderstorms roll thru and while I wasn't cooking outside I did happen to have a clean drip pan sitting on the top grate in one of my kamados. The top vent was set so that the tiny holes were fully open. According to my rain gauge we got just over 2" of rain that night but the drip pan had about a teaspoon of water in it. Nothing to worry about.

Build a tent with HDAF over the DW....it works fine. I have two XL's but have not bought my 2nd SW cap yet....I just use HDAF and it works just fine.
I've cooked in every season and the weather that comes with them here in KY....no wind, rain, sleet, snow, or sunshine has halted the BGE yet !!!!Donnie Dawes - RNNL8 BBQ - Carrollton, KY

I took somewhat different approach to this problem. I had a carport installed. Now heavy or light rain or snow, no problem. Even get shade during the summer.Garland, TX

Same here, and I had a high volume exhaust fan installed in the roof to clear any smoke.Living the good life smoking and joking -

I'm with you. It seems to bother me more to get wet in the rain than it does the egg.
