Shout out to @Jeepster47 - this was his recommendation - since this thread mentions the Kick Ash Basket so often that anyone wanting to keep their deck area clean then a 10 gallon trash can is both small enough and yet large enough to hold months worth of cold dry ash when you shake your KAB.

Damn Ron, you probably polish the KAB and your can after each use, huh?

This is what I do. Honestly - the small stuff that falls through the KAB from the large - I pick it out of the trash can and burn it in the MM. Heresy I know. But don't listen to me; I barely have 1,000 posts lol.

I've looked at the KAB but haven't gotten one yet. They are on my list now. Thanks for the recommendation.

BTUs are BTUs unless they're from center cut organic lump.

@tarheelmatt can you do video? I really want to see one of "lump Tetris" - the music is stuck in my head now.

Op you brought up a good point re pizza. Most cooks don't need much lump going to get the egg up to temp. But pizza, with the plate setter and pizza stone in there, needs some good airflow. It's the only cook I bother making sure the holes are all unobstructed.

if you take the time to sort into 3 size ranges, then make sure the core of the stack is all "center cut" lump, then you will be on the way to success !!!!  (Ok, sarcasm font)   I just dump mine out of the bag until I get toward the bottom with nothing but smalls and dust, but mostly just dump

I must be the only guy that uses match light.  Saves time, no weed burner, cubes, paper towels, etc.

Used to have occasional problems with airflow, picked up the KAB last month and its a huge improvment. Have a dedicated ash bucket and will never go back. Shake, rattle and cook!

Guess I'm onery.  I just stir the old lump and pour in new in my XL.  New bag, end of bag, it doesn't matter.  Sometimes I will light the old lump before adding more new.  I think it gets going faster that way.  The only time I remove the old is if there is quite a bit of it and I will doing a long and slow cook (20 hours, give or take).  But I never throw any away.  Save the old and use it in my Medium for quick cooks like burgers or steaks.  It lights easy and gets hot quicker than new lump.

I believe it was @theyolksonyou that said BTUs is BTUs no matter where they come from.

When I come to the end of a bag I just roll it up tight and stuff the whole thing in my eggs--bag and all--much easier
