Well done. That took a lot of time--you should be very proud of it.

  • Eggxellent job!  I have been pondering the idea of doing about the same thing. With a slight change of putting my gas grill top on one end. Starting from left to right, door with pull out wire shelf that holds my lump tub, then the egg. Then  3' work area counter with drawers or double door with pull out wire shelving for all the misc egg items. Then the gas grill, and finishing up with a door on the end. I will end up using a metal tube frame then covering with wood. I definitely want a concrete top ( have them in my house love em). I know it will be a long cart, however it will be all in one!  Thank you for sharing your pictures you have given me inspiration for sure...

Hi---I would love to know how this has held up.  I'm still worried about all the weight in the middle.

Look awesome. Are you glad you centered the egg instead of putting it to one side? How much glass did you lose in the surface during grinding and polishing?

WOW!! Very nice. How did you fasten the top to the cabinet?

Awesome project. I agree with dstrbd488 in that you need an air gap between the Egg and the concrete base it is sitting on. Here is an example of what can happen, with potentially catastrophic results:

An explosion like that can not only destroy an Egg, but potentially cause serious injury.

What am I looking at here? Your chimney left a giant bird poop stain on your driveway, or it cracked the concrete?

That is a great looking table. Wish I had one just like it for mine. One thing though you may want to try and get some kinda air gap between the bottom of your egg and the concrete slab. Concrete unless it has certain ad-mixes had been known to sort of explode when heated up due to the presence of moisture in the voids inside the concrete. Just a friendly observation
Thanks for the suggestion! I was planning on getting some feet to place in-between the egg and the concrete slab. an explosion would definitely be a bad thing!

late to the game but an air gap is needed.  heat transfers through concrete slightly slower than just sitting the egg on the wood.  a 2" air gap gives you the same heat protection as 14" of concrete.

The circular shape to the right of the chimney is where the chimney was sitting while burning. It heated moisture below the surface of the concrete causing a small explosion.

I haven't been on the forum for a while and am happy that my table was an inspiration for others. Zebra, your table looks awesome! I love how your top turned out. My table has been holding up very well in the New York elements even though it has not been covered through the winter. I have been cleaning the cumaru each spring and reapplying Ipe oil to protect the wood. After reading all of the posts, I plan on raising my egg to get an air gap but am looking for the best feet to raise the egg. My fear is cracking it while lifting it.
