Grill Dome Table Plan?

Looking around at plans.  Trying not to get too involved, as the quicker I build a table, the quicker I will be cooking on my green egg.  Looking to keep cost down as well.

High possibility of adding a 2nd smaller egg in a few years, so no need to go overboard in this one (yet).

I like the Grill Dome plans as they are pretty thorough (compared to the BGE plans).  And seem to utilize wood pretty well with little waste.

I was however just noticing that the table top will be made out of 5 (5/4" x 6") boards which would come to 5.5" wide.  At the 30" width they recommend, that would be a 5/8" gap between every board.   Heck, even making them flush with the side of the table would be a 1/2" gap between every board.  Just seems like an excessive gap.

Has anyone built a variation of this table?  If so, what were your modifications?

Haha, you could have inherited this grill dome table for free (kidding!), they replaced it with a BGE  =)

What is the story behind this?

They got rid of their 18 year old grill dome and table, replaced with BGE and what appears to be a new table.

Planning on starting the table this week.  One of the changes I want to make is a cutout for an 18x18 or so “hot pad”.  I see some people referencing 18 x 18 tiles, but wouldn’t they be 1/2” or so below the table top and not flush?

No experience building a table.  btw, you stated you may want to add a 2nd egg down the road, so whatever you do make sure the cutout is not too large, otherwise you can end up with a round egg in a square hole  =)

You ever use a biscuit joiner before? Pick one up at Harbor Freight for cheap, some biscuits, and some wood glue. I'd do the table top with no gaps and use the biscuit joiner to connect all those boards. You'll need clamps too. It'll be a nicer top than spaced boards. You could mix 6" and 4" (or 8") boards to get the width you need.

For the tile, you just build a raised frame under the tile to make it flush. Or I guess you could add a thinner plywood if you seal it.
