The newest thermapen also uses triple aaa batteries.  The older model is a special batt you won't have in the drawer at home.
I wouldn't call it a "special" battery. It's a CR2032 which is quite common. I may have the number wrong, but whatever it is, it's easy to find. Walmart, lowes, HD and drug stores all carry them. Besides, they last for years. Mine are almost 6 years old now.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

It's the same battery that fits in my red dot on my deer gun so yes, I do have them in the drawer at home.

  • On battery.   Correct.  Just one I don't normally have at home

No...the older models, like mine, used those annoying little 12v batteries that weren't always easy to find (unlike CR2032's which are everywhere.).

I thought about buying a Mk4 when it came out just cuz it uses "normal" batteries but I'm super happy with the Javelin Pro I bought instead (which uses CR2032's).

    Thermopop works great
  • Here is a pretty detailed test of them side by side.  I went with Thermapen way back when as it was top rated by America's Test Kitchen and I have found their recommendations the best for lots of cooking products.  I like the speed, particularly when checking several pieces cooking at once--different size chicken breasts, burgers, etc.  I recently upgraded to the new Mk4 when they had the 15% off whole site sale--thought the backlit display, rotating display and diff batt were worth upgrading with a 15% off sale, and my older model can be handed down to another cook in the family without one.  Go with what fits your cooking style and needs and budget--I have always thought the thermapen was worth the extra price given how much I use it, and I buy the silicon protective boot they sell also.

Also the thermapen mk4 has a thermocouple probe which is supposed to be more accurate and reliable than the thermistor prope the javelin has. That is the main reason for the price difference I was told.

Is 0.1°C difference in accuracy really worth twice the price? Really?

Really. That wasn't my point. Just trying to explain the difference. I don't use a thermometer for most things.  I go by touch. If I need one for pulled pork I use a cheapy Taylor digital that I paid 10 bucks for. It registers boiling water at 211 and I've had it for five years so no I wouldn't spend a 100 bucks on a thermometer either.

  • I paid 85 for newest thermapen with 15% off sale.  Each person can read the reviews and make their own decision--I have been happy with Thermoworks and their customer service.  But the javelin certainly seems to perform well also in the tests.  Neither made in USA--Thermapen is UK and Jav is China.

Well there ya go. If I were going to toss my money around on a thermometer I would much rather toss it to support the Brits economy then China's.

You be happy with it.  I went for the ThermoPop 2 years ago and it works great as well.  I just replaced the battery after using it for 2 years.  That's pretty good, If I didn't have it I would be getting the new MK4.  Happy cooking.

Saw somebody posted amazon prime day today has javelin pro for $38--in certain colors.  That would be a great price  https://www.amazon.com/Lavatools-Javelin-Ambidextrous-Thermometer-Chipotle/dp/B01F59K0KA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468370857&sr=8-1&keywords=javelin+pro+thermometer
Great thermo at a great price.

Deal only lasts for a couple more hours tho so folks should not dally if they want one.

  • And while I am a thermapen diehard  (it was all there was back when I started) I would buy the javelin at that price if I had nothing currently.  Great gift too for any cooking types in your family circle.
