Yes it is Friday.  This is a holiday weekend - Independence Day (for those of us in the US).  It is a time when many display their patriotism.  So the first question for today is how do we all feel about foreign imported charcoal like this KJ lump?  How many US workers will lose their jobs due to imported lump?  Does this threaten the US industry?  Is it worth trying to save the domestic lump suppliers?

Have a couple of cold ones and then let the discussion begin!!!!

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’  Dare to think for yourself.

No U.S. workers were terminated by my purchase of this lump. If a foreign company makes a better product, and sells it for a better price, no jingoistic fake patriotism is going to save the U.S. company from its own incompetence and resistance to change.

Of course, some people will pay more and get lower quality by insisting on being a "good American". All that does is slow innovation and block the creation of better methods, hurting all the worse later on down the road.

A nursery school teacher says to her class, “Who can use the word ‘Definitely’ in a sentence?”

First a little girl says, “The sky is definitely blue.”

Teacher says, “Sorry, Amy, but the sky can be gray or orange, or……”

Second a little boy says, “Trees are definitely green.”

“Sorry, but in the autumn, the trees are brown.”

Little Johnny from the back of the class stands up and asks: “Does a fart have LUMPS?”

The Teacher looks horrified and says, “Johnny! Of course not!!!”

    “Ok…then I DEFINITELY $h1t my pants…”

I opened the bag of KJ I bought 6 months ago last week. Pieces are big and heavy. I am going to have break up the bigger pieces to use in my small and mini. I was arm deep into the bag feeling for golf ball to tennis ball pieces. The mini was over 600* in less than 15 minutes after using a fire starter. My daughter has been buying Wegman's lump. While its not as large or heavy, there is very little tiny pieces. Wegman's lites easily and get up to high temperatures very quickly. While I like RO because of the price, I may be switching brands for the hot and fast cooks.

I've been using Saffire. I think its pretty close to Wicked! 10$ a bag store cost. Light fast, heats up quick and burns clean. Not very smokey so I say it's neutral somewhat.

I've got a lot of Rockwood to go through before I buy more KJ lump, 'cause if it's not the Costco road show, it's quite a bit more expensive. ($26/22 lbs vs the Costco price of $30/44 lbs.)

What I don't like about their ordering system, you give them a zip code, and they point you towards the nearest Ace hardware and before you place your order, they tell you it will be there in 7 days.

So instead of door delivery, they send the lump to Ace, then you wait a week to schlepp to Ace. Why not send it to my driveway?

So, I will just wait for the next Costco road show, and stock up -
