Seeking advice on new cooker

Hello all, I am currently shopping around for a new cooker to use as my "winter beater". I've narrowed it down to a few choices. I'm thinking either a large or kj classic (the classic is $500 less with the roadshow discount) or a XL. Opinions?

If all options are open, the XL.

  • Thanks for the suggestion @bgebrent. This is not going to be an easy decision.

What is a winter beater? Seriously.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

KJ classic would serve you well, no doubt. The XL is just a great, volume cooker.

  • I also love my XL but I have it in a cart which gets covered. The cover can be a little cumbersome to remove and then having to wait for the egg to cool before covering again, especially in the winter in between precipitation.

If you can get a KJ classic fully warrantied for $500 less, no question to be had.

If you don't need the functional benefits of the XL, choose the best value.

  • Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I don't really need the real estate that the XL offers but I was thinking that my eggcessories could just switch between units and the extra space would be a bonus. However the large/classic would suffice in size.

I bought my XL based on the " better to have it and not need it " than the " to need it and not have it " when it comes to space. No regrets :-)

If you want the extra space and are looking to save money with the road show...Why not just get the big joe at the road show?

  • The big joe is actually 50 more than a demo XL here.

Does the demo XL include all the goodies you get with the Big Joe?

So just to understand...you already have an XL, but it is in a cart so you want a second cooker that you can keep uncovered?

If that is the case then I think a large or classic would be plenty of space.  For $500 less I would go with the classic without a second thought.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Im not telling you to not get a second device, but why not just ditch the cover?

That's correct. Thanks for the input.

I don't want to expose the cart and the contents in the drawers to the elements.

I'd go $500 off on the KJ and be happy with the decision. Though it would be a lot cheaper to just buy a stand for the XL and move it over during the winter.

When you live in places where cars rust like Wisconsin, you typically get an older, heavier (for the snow) vehicle for five hundred bucks that you use as your winter beater.  in places where there is snow, ice and road salt, fender benders are more likely and you keep your 'nice' car from getting rusted out.

a big green egg will handle winter just fine.  my only concern is that if you have extreme cold temps, and then heat it up, would the metal band coatings flake off or would any of the bolts that are torqued down pretty good stress with the temperature differential.

Whatever rationale has brought you to the point of another cooker, I support you 100%.

I think for second eggs, most guys stick with "I can save lot on lump with a smaller egg".

    All my vehicles too!

Yeah, my bolts are a little rusty, and I have covers I seldom use, but handling all elements is the biggest virtue of the BGE IMO.
