Interesting article in the NYTimes today about cast iron skillets. Looking at the old and the newer makers that have sprung up in recent years.

I'm not sure I could pay $300 for a cast iron skillet but I do like the idea of new players in the cast iron market.  IMO Lodge makes a good product but it could be better.  There's no reason they couldn't make cast iron like it used to be made (lighter and smoother).  It guess it would cost them more in labor and they feel like consumers wouldn't pay for that premium.  I guess I'll keep buying up older Griswold pieces from Ebay.

    Nice writeup.
I enjoy a $5 Griswold, and have found my fair share, but I'm looking forward to the $75 Field Co. Skillet coming this Fall.

The Black Gold at antique stores, estates, yard sales will soon dry up, like barn finds of classic cars.  The new players give people options, and convenience, without sacrificing performance.

Why wait to 18?  My 9yo uses his own egg, and has claimed his 5qt Double Dutch.

We just inherited several cast iron pans from my wife's grandmother - I have to give credit where it is due, CI posts pushed me to get the pans and then we knew we wanted the family pans afterwards. If I hadn't purchased 2 losge pans prior, my wife wouldn't have picked out the CI heirlooms.

The cast iron pan sets now those are my most used accessories, even more than my thermopop.

I backed both the Field skillet and the Stargazer skillet. Can't wait to get them.
