Carrollton's (KY) Hottest Dog Contest 2016

Well, I think I'm going to enter. I'm not a hotdog expert, so I fall back on my peers....Are Nathans and Hebrew National the top qualifiers for best tasting dogs ?????
I hear that Queen City in Cinci is a good one.
Should I consider a butcher to fix me some up to experiment with ???
The rules don't say anything about brats, mets, etc, it just says hotdogs....I'll check to see what is allowed.
Thanks for the feedback...
Donnie

I'm so anal I'd go with SRF, too. How are you going to top them? So many styles. And do you bake? Might consider making your own buns. (Yes, l'm stupidly competitive when it comes to things like this.)*******Owner of a large and a beloved mini in Philadelphia

im a fan of pearls. never had nathans, heb nats are too salty. if i were picking a hot dog to compete with it would probably be one of the easier ones to get and would pick either boarshead pork and beef (these just have good flavor and the right snap and are sized better than the pearls) or the standard ballpark deli style beef frank that most everyone is happy with. best hotdog ive made in the last couple years was sonaran style but some just want a standard dog

Thanks again for the feedback folks. I am considering the SRF...just so I can try them anyway !!!! The Pearls would have to be shipped and it looked pretty expensive for my first time local podunk competition !!!!
I'm thinking a corndog type bun....open faced with some type of toppings....and maybe even two dogs on the bun. Maybe even lay pieces of different types of franks, to get a variety of taste in every bite.

Me too, but their natural casing frank is the best over their skinless variety.Biggreenpharmacist said:I like the boarshead, too.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -

Forgive the gasser.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
FWIW Donnie, I bought a box of Hebrew National at Costco. We grill dogs occasionally. Neither my wife nor I liked them. Casing was tough and didn't care for the taste. Still have a pack or 2 in the shop fridge. Think the doggies will get them. Much prefer Ball Park bun length franks. I haven't tried any of the other brands mentioned by others so I can offer no opinion on those.
One thing I will suggest, consider your tasters. I hate to say it, but most locals around here don't want anything other than just plain old run of the mill offerings. look at our grocery store selections. Won't stock much variety because it won't move. Same with restaurants. Carrollton has to be the worst town in Ky. to find a good place to eat.
Personally, I like the direction your taking on this, I just don't know about your judges.Tommy

FarmerTom...I agree about locality...I am very worried about simple offerings for the judges. I'll be eggsperimenting for the next couple of weeks !!!!!!Donnie Dawes - RNNL8 BBQ - Carrollton, KY

here is some ideas most dont think of in this post. things like a short marinade of rice vinegar with the chopped onions, a light buttering and toasting of the roll dusted with a favorite rub etc
http://eggheadforum.com/discussion/1193732/what-goes-on-a-hot-dog/p1
how you prep the dog
biggest thing up here is the roll, its split tops only, pay attention to what roll is prefered down there, its important to have the right roll
then theres the mustard, i prefer a good deli mustard but others prefer the cheap yellow. or you can go crazy
hot dog pies, can you serve a cold beer with it

fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
The problem Donnie is facing is 95% of the locals where he lives and I shop and spend a lot of time, would look at your suggestions and say "What the h&ll kind of hot dog is that?" That looks absolutely great to me and I can only hope Donnie's judges are among the few from around here that have a little sense of adventure regarding food.fishlessman said:here is some ideas most dont think of in this post. things like a short marinade of rice vinegar with the chopped onions, a light buttering and toasting of the roll dusted with a favorite rub etc

Sadly, for most, their biggest concern will be whether to apply mustard or ketchup or both.Tommy

pretty much the same here, things that you cant change here are roll, mustard, relish, onion. things up here we can change is cooking method, butter fried, steamed, grilled, heated gently in oil. would also stick with a boarshead or ballpark, not many appreciate a great hot dog. i would have to make the dog my way though, throwing caution to the windFarmerTom said:
