Getting my Egg Hot Enough

  • What DaveRichardson step 1 says: pick your lump, don't "lump dump".  I bought a bag of BGE lump for the first time in years and built a pyramid in the middle of the firebox strictly of BGE pieces (surrounded by other).  Using a fire starter, had a good fire going at 20 minutes.  Put the grid in and the dome down and 10 minutes later 350°: I forgot to open the bottom vent!!  So opening everything up, five more minutes and the lump was going.  Cooked two porterhouses with the dome temp 650 - 700+°, which I hadn't seen in months.  Had to put the DFMT on to control it.  Getting the temperature up does depend on the lump and how easily it breaks into small pieces.

How much smaller stuff is in the firebox? Small stuff packs together, choking off air flow. Also make sure that the holes on the side of the firebox are not plugged. Have read that the placement of the opening in the firebox is irrelevant. If opening the dome gets the temperature up would think that you have to much ash...or to much small stuff...or holes plugged. I was curious, I loaded our Large with very small pieces of chunk. Still got it enough to cook a pizza, just took it a while...
