Table top height

So I've seen a bunch of plans to consider before building my table for my new LBGE I'm getting in two weeks. The plans from BGE say a 15" space from base to table top. I'm trying to find the definitive answer before I build. Gonna use a granite slab and a table nest. So, should the slab be 15" from the top or the base of the Egg in the table nest?

I just built my table and was advised to add 2 inches for the table nest. So 17 inches is what I used with a 21 inch hole. Well after putting the base in place with the nest, it wasn't to my liking. The gap around the egg was 1/4 inch and for my purposed, that was too tight. I put 2x4 spacers (so 1 1/2 inch thick) under the nest legs and that gave me at least 1/2 inch all around and this I can live with. Luckily my design allowed for adjustment so I lowered the top 1 1/2 inches. I haven't put the egg back in yet as I need to get assistance but I'm sure it will be fine.

So if you want it tight and are using the table nest, use 17 in. If you want a bit more room, use 15 1/2. I do recommend using the nest as many on here have repeated over and over again.

    Good luck and cheers

Your hinge will hit the granite, be careful

Ok so if I place my table nest on top of the granite slab which is 15" am I good? I don't want problems with the hinge. I guess that means the BGE plans show a 15" height and 21" inch hole and intend for you to use the table nest. Is there possibly a consensus on that? And can anyone show me a picture of how the egg looks in the table with that setup?

thank you all so much for the help and dialog.

How close are you to a BGE dealer?  Go to a local dealer and measure a table with a large egg in it. If they aren't using a table nest, add 2".  Older egg bases are a different dimension than the newer ones.  I think the 15" dimension reflects designs from the days of the older eggs.

My table has the 17" height, table nest (2"), and 1.5" of fire brick. Felt line is 5" above the table surface (I have an old egg).  Can't help with the hinge drop dimension - I have the old school hinges.

I just finished building my table for my new LBGE.  With a table nest, it is 17" to the bottom of the hinge.  For my table, I made the surface my egg sits on 16.5" from the top surface of my table.  With a 21" hole, it worked out pretty well.  Hope this helps.

I am just about at this process....so you are saying 16.5" from top to top and it should work out with the news, correct?  I am not going to have it sit on a paver.  Or should I?

I would add a paver under the nest for protection.  I just built a table for my XL, initially only installed a table nest.  I did a 650 degree cook and my table under the nest burned my hand when I touched it.  I have since gone back and added a pacer.  It's the high temp cooks that will burn the wood, at 400 degrees the wood is only warm to touch.

Maybe this will help. 16 1/4 inch top to top. The open hinge has about 7/8 inch of clearance.

i did 15" from the top to the platform where the egg sat, then used the table nest and never had a clearance issues with the new style band.  I don't have any pictures as I recently sold that table but that is the dimensions I am planning for the new one.

Pavers, or better yet fire bricks, will provide more protection from fire.  Its a good idea to add them.  Since you are still designing your table, there really isn't any good reason not to include them.

i saw 0 evidence after 4 years of my egg in a table nest for a pavers under that and will not be using them on the new table.
