I'll be out in Edmonton in a month or so. I will look for the one backyard with smoke coming out of it.
Have fun and I'm jealous. Really wish I had an XL instead of the large.

Fellow Albertans...
My interpretation and 5 cents:
Based on the fireban wording, egging with charcoal is ALLOWED...ie, not banned. The important part of the wording (shown below) is "...barbeques designed for cooking or heating are allowed.".
The use of charcoal briquettes "fires" is prohibited...so using an open firepit fueled by charcoal is a no-no. However a Big Green Egg is a barbeque designed for cooking, and is therefore okay to use. No different than a smoker or a pellet grill.
Although the wording is cryptic in every sense of the word, it clearly states that bbqs that are designed for cooking are allowed.
Exerpt...Effective May 13 at noon, the province-wide fire ban was amended to the following:
A fire ban is in effect for portions of northern and central Alberta. The fire ban applies to Alberta’s Forest Protection Area in northern and central Alberta and all counties, municipal districts and special areas, as well as provincial parks and recreation areas. The fire ban does not apply to cities, towns, villages, summer villages, or federal lands, such as national parks. NOTE: A county or municipal district may decide to add additional restrictions – please check your local area.
Prohibited
All open fires, including wood campfires, charcoal briquette fires, turkey fryers, and tiki torches
Portable propane fire pits and gas or propane stoves and barbeques designed for cooking or heating are allowed.

Privincially you might be right. However I live instratcona county and their informational page says this.
No outdoor fires are permitted until further notice, including burning barrels and fire works, nor are recreational fire pits or charcoal barbecues allowed. The use of propane appliances, such as barbecues, is permitted. Fire permits are suspended until the ban is lifted.

Looks like I stand corrected. The level of risk certainly appears to be higher in the northern part of the province. We had 4 inches of snow down here 3 days ago. I still have remnants of the white stuff on the north side of the house even today!matoch said:Privincially you might be right. Further to this...when I drilled down to areas north such as Spruce Grove, this was embedded in the wording of the fire ban:
Description: The City of Spruce Grove has implemented a fire ban within its municipal boundaries effective at noon on Wednesday, May 11. All existing fire permits are suspended and no new fire permits will be issued until further notice. This fire ban prohibits all open fires, including: • Residential fire pits, including those that have permits; • Campfires in campgrounds or parks; • Cook stoves using solid fuel, like wood or charcoal, in parks; • Barbecues using solid fuel, such as charcoal briquettes; and • Controlled burns in commercial and industrial areas. Portable propane or natural gas fire pits and gas or propane stoves designed for cooking (ie. barbecues) are not included in the ban. The situation will be reviewed as conditions change.
Goes to show the level of danger in and around the province right now. Much of it has to do with the fire up in Ft Mac. It's all hands on deck, so regardless of the risk in other areas of the province, there are no fire fighting resources to spare to trouble shoot other areas. As a result...the smart play is don't take any chances, put a province wide ban in place and mitigate the risk.
The good news...the May long weekend is days away...and EVERYONE IN ALBERTA KNOWS...it always rains on the first official long weekend of summer! Lets hope this year is no different.
