Firebox placement

i was having an issue with grate angle when my PSOO2's in. I thought it may be the fire ring. Nope. Turns out it's my fire box. When it's aligned so the slice in the fire box meets the middle of the lower vent it causes the fire box to sit on one of the bumps the bottom of the egg and rock a little too. Does the crack in the fire box need to be aligned with the middle of the lower vent? What have others done?

I have never intentionally mis-aligned the fire-box opening with the lower vent, but heat seeking air likely doesn't care. If you perceive an issue, play around with it and see if there is any impact on your cooks.
Btw-you can grind down the offensive bump and that may equalize the whole thing. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint. -
The "stress relieving slot" in the firebox is through the center of the inlet vent. The firebox inlet vent should align with the inlet vent in the egg's base ... that allows the least about of restriction to incoming airflow.
The ceramic in our eggs is really easy to shape via sanding or grinding ... sandpaper, Dremel grinder, angle grinder, etc. You can easily remove the bumps so that the firebox sets flat.

What the Cap says but keep in mind if you rotate it very far you won't be able to clean out the ash.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky.

That's good to know. The "bumps" in the base are evenly spaced and look like they're part of it's strength. I've heard of people who do a lot of smoking rotating the firebox a hair to slow down draft but i might just align them and leave as is. Everything is sitting flatter since vacuuming out the egg.Jeepster47 said:

Are you talking about a Mini-Max size egg ... if not, what size?

No, large egg.

Okay ... on my large, the inside floor of the base is smooth. Set the firebox on a level surface and see if it rocks ... that's where the problem usually occurs. That's the easiest surface to correct.

With minor "rocking" of my firebox, I fixed it by using a small piece of aluminum foil to stabilize it.

im going to try that. With my original fire ring I had no rocking, but I realized yesterday that there was a white outline of where my firebox used to be set when I first started using the egg. It was a little bit out of alignment with the lower vent but didn't rock.
