Kamados are older than offsets?

Options
I occasionally run across "kamados are cheating" they are not real bbq, etc.

I was thinking about this.  Don't kamados have a longer history than offsets, etc?

How would one classify a smokehouse?  I could see that being older,  but that seems more like a vertical cabinet to me.

    What is "real bbq"?

Were folks cooking via kamado type cookers a thousand years ago cooking "real bbq"?

If so, does anybody have any of their rub recipes? I'd love to try on of those. :)

if they want 'real' barbecue, it better be done on a wood framed rack over an open fire or hole in the ground.

    other than that, it's "cheating"

Here is what I found on Wikipedia, and it says Kamado goes back about 4000 years.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamado

But I don't know if they considered it BBQ, just cooking food would be my guess.  As long as it's good I will eat it.  The Egg has made me picky when it comes to BBQ and Steaks when eating out.

Aaron Franklin's book has a chapter on smokers. He lumps (no pun intended) BGE/kamados in with Weber kettles and upright drum smokers. He feels that since those kinds of cookers are not really fully burning wood and just rely on smoke from smoldering chunks they are all just "naturally fired outdoor ovens with smoke".

Some people get their feelings hurt by that and take offense. Others couldn't care less. C'est la vie.

However, he doesn't say that those devices aren't capable of producing "real bbq" (whatever that may be) just means those aren't his preferred type of cooker.

Might I add to your proper definition, the wood should be pimenton, the protein isn't beef or hogs, and cooked only under a tropical sun.

FWIW, I came across an old print of Taino doing 'Q. Poor drawing, but large fish and birds were the foods, and there was a big swirl of smoke drifting off from the pit.

    exactly.

i suppose what they really have an issue with is they don't have to stay up all night drinking in order to cook their food.

not that i have a problem with that.
