Silicone gasket

The gasket on the Large is wasted. I have several tubes of high temp RTV, the ones that are used in a caulk gun. I also have, somewhere in the bomb drop zone...aka my garage. Don't know which one it is...and have no idea where I put it...

    I think the Rutland gasket is still the gold standard here.

    Damn phone. I do know the gasket I have is in an unlabeled white box. I think it is a Rutland. When I lock the garage I am going to look for it....

    The permatex gasket is absolutely fine. permatex is actually intended to be used as a gasket alone

    the only reason it isn't as popular is because of the extra work involved

    it is probably a better solution than the rutland, but the rutland has its own advantages

    Frank, who authored the piece made a few comments which I have to take exception to. Specifically he said:

    Rutland – Also a good alternative and many have installed a Rutland with great success (see:  How To Install A Rutland Gasket). The issues I had with the Rutland were twofold. One was the fact that although one kit is more than satisfactory with a Large BGE ending up with one seam, the XL BGE required two kits yielding two seams where problems are more likely to occur. The second was that fact that the rope like material started to unravel at the seams, likely due to my failure to install properly.

    First - he is correct about needing to buy 2 kits for an XL. That means having 4 butt ends plus throwing away 5 foot of unused gasket. Let alone 2 tubes of the Rutland adhesive which came in those blister kits. Instead he could have bought the proper length needed for an XL and only had 2 butt ends. BTW I know a guy who only sells the length needed for each size egg - but I digress...

    Secondly he chose the rope style Rutland which was the wrong type! He should have used the flat braided Rutland.

    And lastly - guess who is now outfitting his small BGE with the proper Rutland! If you need more than 2 guesses then you may have had too many adult beverages tonight.

    I used some high temp RTV gasket material on my large BGE several years ago. Scraped off the old gasket and degreased using ?? something I had in the shop. Ceramic was clean and degreased. Applied two rows of RTV and covered with plastic wrap. Closed the lid to looked for light leaks shining a flashlight through the top vent. Applied more RTV to seal the leaks. Let it setup and cure, removed the plastic wrap. Still on the BGE the last time I cooked.
    1 Large BGE, 1 Mini BGE, 1 Minimax BGE, Original wife and 3 dogs living in the heart of BBQ country in Round Rock Texas.

    The permatex gasket will be my next move if and when my BGE high heat gaskets play out.  I'm on yr 6 on my large,yr 3 on the small and 1 yr on the mini.  Not bad for a cheap gasket. 

    What say you @skiddymarker ?

    I have been completely satisfied with the Rutland gasket the I got from RRP about a year ago.
    The Permatex only gasket is intriguing, however I believe I would make a mess with it.

    The Rutland is relatively easy to install and with care, makes for a neat job.

    Just ordered gaskets for all 4 of my Eggs from Ron. When (if?) I build my next Reverse Flow I will be ordering some gasket material for the firebox door from Ron as well...
