Noticed a ton left over yesterday, still around 6.99/pound. I bought some seafood, but it occurred to me today they will likely be dumping these soon

i just called, and the guy said instead of selling them they "have to throw them out on the expiration date"

so, instead of selling them to a guy that will cure and/or freeze them, as well was age them another week or so anyway, they'll toss them.

I would gladly pay a few bucks a pound to keep them from wasting them. But not 6.99/lb

bit of a waste. We throw out ridiculous amounts of perfectly good food in this country because people don't know any better.

YUP.  My mom works at a college dining hall.  Tuition is $42,000.  A very high end dining operation.  They have mini restaurants in there.  Any day you can go in and get Mexican, Italian, American Grill, etc.  All you can eat.  They make everything fresh.  If any food was "out" or "presented" and was not consumed in that dining period, it must be tossed.  Gallons of dressings cart after cart of food, tray after tray . . . into the garbage.  They cannot feed the homeless, they can't take it home, NOTHING.  Why?  Someone could get sick and then sue them.

i designed a couple of those dining halls.  we interviewed a few food-service managers, and they told us the sad secret was that most of the kids eat chicken fingers and french fries.  those high end cooking options are for the parents too ooh and aah over during the tour!  i bet they throw out a lot of uneaten stuff.  sad.
