Saturday Nite Supper: Pizza and Pretzels-with a Fire Flashback for some added fun!

The weather was beautiful here so hubby requested Pizza on the Egg. I figured I would do pretzels also since it was a good opportunity. Set the grill for indirect, 450. Got the pretzels on the stone, 5 minutes in decided to check.

I opened the BGE, did not burp (never had to before at that temp) and I heard a "woosh" and felt a blast of heat. No flames, just the heat. I jumped back, closed lid and WTH-some of my hair was singed. Not too bad, just scared me. Tried to burp it again, same issue. I finally had to shut her down for about 3 minutes and start it up again. Needless to say I have never experienced something like this and do not know how that happened.

Finished the pretzels, they were fine...then on to the pizza. Got the Egg up to 600 for that, no issues. Pretzels were the Alton Brown recipes, Pizza was a pesto, artichoke, shrimp and goat cheese recipe from the BGE cookbook. All was yummy.

Pictures below of the beginning and end products. I forgot to take a before shot of the pizza.

The fire blast scared me though...any ideas how that happened at that temp?

Calibrate some thermometer? May be cooking hotter than you think.

Thanks Guys! It was very good, and hair loss was minimal thankfully. I will check the thermometer to be sure cause that could be the issue. Also I am thinking I might have had a rush of air in through the bottom...I noticed smoke pouring out of the bottom vent and around the sides when I tried to open it. But I will be more careful in the future for sure!

Basically Alton Brown's recipe on Food Network. They were very good, very easy recipe of flour, yeast, salt, sugar...rise one hour and ready. Link to recipe is below. I cooked pretzels indirect, 450 till done.

I've done those pretzels before and they came out awesome, but they were in the oven. Did the BGE impart any sort of smoke/grill flavor to them?

I think they imparted a slight smoke flavor, to me the biggest difference was the browning and texture. They got nice and golden brown in the Egg and a little crispier, the oven did not have that texture. That was the biggest difference to me.
