Space around EGG

I'm planning a table for my first-ever, soon-to-be-purchased EGG (large size). There has been a lot of forum discussion about how much space is too little between the EGG and the table (re: fire hazard). What I'm wondering is:  how much space is too much? Certainly if the space gets too large, say for instance 6 inches, you lose functional table top space and the EGG maybe loses some potential support when needed. I'm thinking that a space of around 1 inch on all sides of the EGG would work good.  Am I missing something?  Thanks for any thoughts from you pros out there!
