Gulf Coast Red Snapper

I hope some of you have seen the new series on National Geographic Channel called "Big Fish Texas". It airs Wednesday nights.
The show centers around a family of Fisherman who also own a seafood market in Galveston.
The market is called "Katie's Seafood Market". The owners, Buddy and Katie have been good friends of the family for over 25 years. We have watched their little kids grow up over the years and now they are very involved in the business and commercial fishing.
I was lucky enough to catch a little fishing action last weekend. Buddy hosted us to a small commercial fishing experience.
We used rod and reel and boated over 800 pounds of Red Snapper for the fish market. All the fish were tagged and processed and probably out the door later the same day to a restaurant or seafood department at H.E.B groceries in Texas.
We were flying off shore in the "Hull Raiser". A smaller, renovated, go fast, commercial boat. For me, it was the coolest fishing experience ever. I learned allot from Buddy and his Captain. I understand we were not fishing the north sea...but it gave a little taste of what real commercial fisherman do for a living. And I will emphasize "little" again. They truly earn every penny.

A few photos...

Thank you,
Darian

That sounds like such a great experience, Darian.  Did you get to take home, or eat, any of your spoils?

    Thank you Kelley.
No, all the fish had to be tagged and processed.
Unloading and tagging is done under VERY watchful eyes.
I'm sure a family discount, wink...wink, would have been given but I already had dinner plans.
    Thank you,

What a cool experience.  I've only watched a couple episodes of the show but they sure seem to be good folk.
I'd love to throw a few of those on my eggs.  Talk about good eats.

    Thanks for sharing!!

Im glad the red snapper fisheries are strong enough to support commercial harvest. Maybe one day the individual angler will be allowed to catch some.

I hear you...it's a sore subject on the west side of the gulf as well.

We caught snapper out of Pensacola this past July.  The biggest one we hauled in was just shy of 22 lbs.  That wouldn't even raise an eyebrow inside the haul that your pictures show.  They are fun to catch and incredibly delicious!  I look forward to doing it again.  Loved your write up!

Very cool. If memory holds I think the last time we saw each other was in front of their seafood market after I loaded a yeti full to bring home.
