just curious with the cork users, have you checked the same temp with and without the cork. my 2.5 inch teltru measures low by a little more than 10 percent compared to a 4 inch stem. it doesnt make a difference with most cooks but i do compensate with low and slows by adding 10 percent to the gage reading
On my slow cooks I use my grate probe to get that temp and go by that. I think the cork may alter slightly but not enough to make a huge difference.
its not so much the cork as the distance in the egg between the sensor and the ceramics. the naked whiz did a study years ago with the shorter stems and his was 13 percent off, it made more of a difference back then because most eggers at the time cooked low and slows at 220 dome which meant we set up at 200 on the short stem, we had to convert that reading for posting purposes so no one would try to hold 200 for low and slows =) its good to know your cooker and your gages, you see the big smokers and a gage might say 300, thats for that cooker as maybe the placement of the gage isnt near the food, its also why your cooking at grate temps and not dome on low and slows

They don't bend on their own. It's from hitting a pork butt, turkey, etc. as you close it

Happened to my large a long time ago

I have video evidence that ss stuff can bend on it's own.  Because there is no ss stuff.

I just put on a new gauge.  Is leaving it loose a bad thing?  I hadn't planned on attaching it, and if it bumps food nothing gets damaged.

Btw, I really like new gauge.

By "loose" I assume you mean without the click. You don't need the clip as gravity holds the Thermometer in place. No clip also mean ease of removal. BUT - even without the clip the probe can still get bent due to the way it is positioned during dome closure.

2 of my 3 are bent but I'm pretty sure my Dutch Oven is responsible for it.  They still work fine.
That is how,I have bent every one of mine. Almost did it....again....yesterday when using a DO. I normally cook with a controller....need to get in the habit of just taking the damn thermometer out of the dome when using a controller...
