Leaving the plate setter in gives it a good burn-off also. If you have built up gunk on the setter from low-and-slow without a water pan, foil wrap, etc. the burn does a great job. I can easily just push the remaining ash off after the burn, and it gets right down to flat (but blackened) surface without a problem.

Here's the thing, unless your prepared to replace the gasket, don't go full-bore with your clean burn.
When I say full-bore, I'm talking wide open for any extended time, it'll melt the gasket, causing the dome and lower section to fuse together.
Oh, it'll get superclean, but there will be a price to pay ..
Instead, run the egg for 30-45 minutes @ 600 degrees after then next cook. The egg is designed to be a self cleaning system.

Also pull your dome thermo before you launch.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

Leaving the PS in lessens the cleaning of your dome. The only time I do a burn out is when the crud on my dome starts to flake off. In fact I can live with a dirty fire ring and fire box as they stay far cleaner since they are close to the fire - but suit yourself about the PS. Also it is wise to remove your dome thermometer to prevent damage if you are going inferno!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

No need to let it go nuclear. Control the temp to around 650-700º and let it go longer. It will get the job done with less chance of bad things happening. Good practice for controlling the temp for a high heat pizza.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
Sorry to jump in with another question, but how often would you all recommend doing this? Once a year? Only when the dome starts flaking?? Thx...LBGE - Athens, Georgia

Just when it is too dirty for your liking. Which is pretty subjective, on its own, but also how dirty it gets and how fast depends so much on what you cook, how you cook, and how often.Toronto ON -

Yeah I just do it after cooking a steak or something. Let it sit at 600 for an hour or so
