I've always been someone who cleans new items before being used for food. I was able to remove that bottom stainless steel skirt as well as the pump cap by finally resorting to using a set of rubber pipe wrenches. Man were they tight! I was very surprised to find all the grease and manufacturing residue on the inside of that skirt. I really recommend you clean it or at least look at it before you use it.

Not to disagree with you but, isn't the food sealed in a ziplock or foodsaver bag?

Yes but that grease and debris would become a coating on the container and at least the initial bags of food. The instruction booklet discusses maintenance including washing that skirt. I was just surprised at how dirty and greasy it was for something brand new.

So what you are saying is you reuse the bags? I was just planning on FS bags and pitching or for larger pieces 1 gallon ZipLoc bags, but again single use.

Oops, I just filled up my container plopped the Anova in, threw a pork loin in,and hit go.

After using it I disassembled it and it was clean.  One thing I like about it, just circulating hot water.

Geez Ron, you must have bought the really cheap model.  Thanks for the warning ... mine was clean.  But, damn was it tight ...

I'm sure you are right about the machine itself, but I'm talking about the stainless steel tubing base they call the skirt. It is meant to be removed and cleaned. I was just surprised how dirty mine was inside! Hey, maybe my dirty skirt was the only one some disgruntled employee fouled before being fired that morning!  =) I just know I am glad I caught it before using mine and I thought a heads up post might help others.

Thanks at least for agreeing how tight that skirt was! Was your bottom cap also a bear like mine? I wrestled with both for some time before I grabbed my 2 rubber strap pipe wrenches and even then it was a struggle.

Didn't have to use straps.  The skirt came off hard but with bare hands.  The cap was really stuck.  Soaked it in hot water for a few minutes and then used some rubber gripper sheets to get the bottom cap off.

Ran both of them on/off a number of times to smooth out the bumps.

I used a pother lifter.  Like a duffel bag.  Popped right off.

Yup - just proves once again this father and son tag team are a couple brutes when it comes to dealing with getting tight skirts off!

Just put a few drops of Dawn in the water while you use it. that'll clean it right up while you cook. :)

I'd ask Lit what he'd do Ron, personally.  You know just to make sure you're not steering no one away.

Sure - but had I not removed it first I wouldn't have seen how dirty it was so what you are suggesting is leave it alone (which I didn't) and shoot some Dawn Dirty Duck cleaning soap in there! LOL

I've never had an issue getting a skirt off. Try some alcohol next time to get it looser.

@tarheelmatt I earned that!  Just pulled my phone out of the bag of rice today.  Seems to be working :)

I got the Kickstarter version back in late 2014, if anything the steel skirt has always been too loose, I have trouble keeping it tight, they must have changed the thread tolerance.  By the way, not sure if they've changed the 'twist' orientation of the bottom plastic cap, mine is 'righty loosy'.

@Ozzie_Isaac ... did you ever find out if you could vacuum bag the phone without destroying something?

Nope, since my screen was already cracked I didn't want to risk it.

In another life time elsewhere TNW told the world how his wife dropped her cell phone in a "honey pot" - I don't think they went diving for that one.

Ron, I think we have different definitions of "honeypot".

All that so-called "manufacturing residue" is the main ingredient in "flavor town".  I would go bag-less for the first cook to take full advantage of it.

Sorry about your cramp, ron.  I have been there.  Try eating a banana.  Potassium can work wonders.
